Another pass reopens

A 13-mile stretch of state Highway 20 west of the Cascade summit, closed by snow for six days, re-opened Monday morning after crews completed avalanche control work and plowed away drifts of snow.

The route has reopened as far east of Interstate 5 near Diablo at Milepost 134, said state Department of Transportation spokesman Dave Chesson.

The regular seasonal closure of the highway across the Cascades remains in effect near Diablo for eastbound traffic and at milepost 178, 7 miles west of Mazama, for westbound traffic, Chesson said.

The reopening of the segment freed more than 80 people, trapped by last week's closure at Diablo, to travel on the highway to the west.
