« Poll: Palin not popular with 'center' | Main | Viaduct boot camp »
He has won three bruising election battles in a Democratic-trending district, and Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash., is now seeking to move up in the world of Capitol Hill - the Washington, D.C., Capitol Hill.
Reichert is out to capture a seat on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, which served as political base to his predecessor, the late Rep. Jennifer Dunn, R-Wash.

If successful, the three-term congressman would join three Democratic colleagues in holding a seat of financial power in the capital.
Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., chair subcommittees on the Senate and House Appropriations Committees. With the power of purse strings, they belong to what's known in Congress as the "college of cardinals" - an amusing designation since Murray is a woman, and Dicks is a Lutheran.
Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., was given a seat on the Senate Finance Committee after winning reelection in 2006. Another Westerner, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairs the finance panel.
A Ways & Means seat for Reichert would likely cement his alliance with a local institution that has promoted his political fortunes on both its news and editorial pages - The Seattle Times. Dunn made a cause out of repealing the inheritance tax, or "death tax" as she called it, which has been a major goal of the Blethen Family who own a bare majority stake in Fairview Fannie.
In a year filled with Democratic triumphs, Reichert expanded to more than 20,000 votes his margin of victory over two-time Democratic challenger Darcy Burner. The former King County Sheriff has been a target of Democrats in 2004, 2006 and 2008 -- and has come on in the stretch to win all three races.
Reichert, who represents East side suburbs in King and Pierce Counties, is the lone Republican congressman from Western Washington.
The 8th District has given healthy majorities to Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama.
