McDermott switches vote on bailout

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., voted for the $700 billion financial bailout package before he voted against it.

What gives?

McDermott, who represents Seattle, says the version that came to the House from the Senate differred too much from the plan that he voted for in the House last week. That plan was narrowly defeated.

The Senate plan passed the House on Friday. Voting in favor of the bailout bill were Washington Democratic Reps. Brian Baird, Norm Dicks, Rick Larsen and Adam Smith. Voting 'no' were Washington Republicans Doc Hastings, Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Dave Reichert. Democratic Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., also voted no.

McDermott was the only U.S. House member from Washington state who switched his vote.

McDermott says:

On Thursday morning, the morning after the Senate passed a very different bailout bill, two things happened.

The filings for new unemployment benefits hit a seven year high, and a number of telephones melted in my congressional office as my constituents called in with their opinions.

By the thousands, the people of the 7th Congressional District are absolutely enraged by what the Senate did.

Senate Republicans blocked Senate Democrats from legislation that delivers for Main Street.

Senate Republicans demanded the pot be sweetened. But they left out the millions of Americans who can't find a job and are running out of benefits. And they left out a lot of other Americans too.

With economic times getting tougher by the day, Senate Republicans have no problem telling the American people to go it alone.

Last week, the House passed on a strong bi-partisan vote a stimulus package to help Main Street America.

But Senate Republicans said no; they were willing to help Wall Street but look the other way for Main Street...

The Senate dug an enormous ditch alongside Main Street, and they want the House to drive into it.

Is McDermott older than Biden? He needs to go too!

McDermott was the only U.S. House member from any state who switched his vote.

A $100M tax break for NASCAR is evidence of the decline of this empire.

I was one of the people that called Rep McDermott. I wrote him an email today thanking him for voting against this egregious bill.

It is truly unfortunate that the majority of his colleagues in Congress voted for this bill. If the people hate this bill as much as I believe they do, those politicians that voted for it are going to find themselves struggling in their next election.

Now that our Congressmen have deserted us and voted for the Bailout, what do we do? Well, normally I would have voted again for my Congressman, but now I don't see anyone who deserves my vote.

So, I've decided to register as a write-in candidate and vote for myself! You can too. It's easy. Just go to the website of your states' Secretary of State and download the registration form, or call them for information. But do it soon, since registration deadlines are fast approaching.

After all, you're bound to agree with all of your own policies and you'd never vote against your own self interest.

What McDermott typically votes 'for' is b@stardized do-nothing legislation at best. The fact that he 180'd and decided to vote against it, gives me a glimmer of hope that this bailout might just be a positive solution.

I, too, am one of McDermott's constituents and emailed him asking him to change his vote. Thank goodness he listened to the people he represents, even though it wasn't enough to block this terrible bailout.

If you read the notes from his constituents you see why this guy is still in office. They don't have the brights to understand that he waited until the bill passed to change his vote so he could claim he voted against it. His dim constituents can't figure that out and rush to keep this guy in office.

Sounds to me like McDermott is just listening to his constituents, REPRESENTING them like a U.S. REPRESENTATIVE should.

What about Palin's big flip-flop?

First she was for a windfall profits tax on oil companies when it meant checks to each resident of Alaska ($12,000.00 a year for a family of four, $21,000 a year for Palin's family) but now she's against them for every American.

What's good for Alaska isn't good enough for the rest of the country?

McDermott is just listening to his constituents...and voting against this worthless, pork-filled bailout that will be next to worthless in the end.

Sfyri at #191584 - more than 50 members of the House switched their vote.

What do you mean by saying "McDermott was the only U.S. House member from any state who switched his vote."?

B Anderson--

I knew I left off the type of vote, so that's why I posted the afterthought #191592.

He was the only one to go from Yes to No. 58 went No to Yes, so the net gain was 57.

Thank you again Mr. McDermott! I'm glad you voted against it.

We are being taken for all we've got and everyone is
just sitting around and watching it happen.

Glad to see the outrage go across the party lines. My friends and family on the Dry Side are totally upset too.

Ron Paul and Mike Gravel??? That is my dream ticket. I guess I'm just crazy...

I am a Republican residing in the enemy territory that is the 7th CD and I am glad Baghdad Jim voted no.

I am still voting against him

So.

The first vote he was wrong. But now... he's ok because he must have listened.

So he ignored his constiuents the first time and now that he listened you praise him... You people are crazy.

RationalThought, you are anything but. How does this make sense to you.

Really. If there was a 3rd try, he would have flipped again.

This bailout is absolute bush. Giving $700 billion to the former CEO of Goldman Sacs to decide who wins and loses is throwing gasoline on the fire. I appreciate and will remember Senator Cantwell's and Representative McDermott's votes against this outrage. Obama and Biden (and of course McCain) were pathetic. Wasting this last week primarily to pile on another $105 billion in debt financed pork so as to buy a few dozen Republican votes was too much. The Republicans have run our nation into the ground – financially, militarily, and morally.

I was upset when I heard he voted for it the first time, but glad he voted against it the second time.

Thanks for listening to your district, Jim!

We appreciate it.

Will,

Do you think that it was ok for him to vote against his district the first time? The constituents were screaming just as loudly then...

Thanks for (finally) listening to your district, Jim!

We appreciate it (now).

McDermott did say the bill was different the second time. Having not read it myself, and knowing that it convinced 58 republicans to change their vote to yes, I do believe him when he says it got worse.

What's unfortunate is that phones were melting all over the country but less than half of representatives did what their constituents demanded. Those who overrule the people they govern - because they think themselves wiser - I hope will not keep their positions.
