Heart to Palin: Cut it Out

Ann and Nancy Wilson, headliners of Heart, demanded Friday that Republicans stop using their hit song "Barracuda" at rallies for vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

It's the second time this year that GOP stage managers have found themselves in trouble for using music without a singer's permission. Jackson Browne has sued the Republican Party over the McCain campaign's use of his "Running on Empty."

In a statement, Heart disassociated itself from the political views of the politician oft-nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda" in Alaska.

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women," wrote the Wilson sisters. "We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image."
"The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late '70's as a rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The barracuda represented the business.)
"While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC (Republican National Convention), there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

The feuding between musicians and Republicans actually goes back more than four decades.

In 1964, as "Hello Dolly" was the toast of Broadway, the GOP borrowed its signature tune for a song, "Hello Barry," celebrating presidential nominee Barry Goldwater.

The musical's producer forced Republicans to cease and desist. An authorized "Hello Lyndon," saluting Lyndon Johnson, was sung at the Democratic Convention.

Indeed. Palin is the now Obama. Both are great speakers - and nothing more to show for. One is a governor, the other is a legislator.
I see this coming: McCain will be elected as the next president, which sets up Palin for a match with Clinton 4 years later.

Yeah, when I heard the song playing in the background, knowing the politics of the Wilson sisters (I'm a big Heart fan), I figured a protest of some kind would be forthcoming. Kind of a moot point now, probably. She doesn't need the song anyway.

The funny part is the meaning of the song and how the RNC uses it for the opposite.

Like someone playing "The One I Love" or "Every Breath You Take" at weddings.

of course, if they have any royalties for them using the song, they should donate it to Obama team

It was funny to see those creepy old ultra-white GOPers painfully enduring an actual loud rock 'n' roll three-decade old song! Man, they are really happenin'!

And too, just imagine if Gramps McCain knew anything about such new-fangled things as computers, the Internets, or iTunes -- his personal iPod Greatest Hits playlists would be hilarious: everything from "Bomb, Bomb, Iran" to "Bomb, Bomb, Venezuela," to "Bomb, Bomb, Syria" to "Bomb, Bomb, North Korea."

They are basically saying that if you don't believe like they do, you can't play their music. I don't believe like they do and will continue to listen to whatever I want, thank you. They are taking themselves way too seriously. I love them but come on. Music is for the fans. We pay their paychecks.

There's the law and there's doing the right thing. What is the law for playing an arist's song at such an event? Now that the Wilson sisters have expressed their feelings the people playing the song should honor their request, no matter what the law is.

I am so glad there are people in this world who still stick up for themselves and think for themseleves.

No they're not. They're saying, don't rant and rave on national TV against the candidate that I'm supporting and everything I believe in, and then use my song in the background to give the impression that I support your candidate.. Whether that was the intent of the RNC or not, you have to get permission to play an artists music, especially at an event that has a large viewership.

If you're saying the Wilson Sisters and Heart are within their rights to demand the GOP drop that song, you might want to check further. WHO actually has the right to approve the use of music? In precious few situations, the artist has final approval in where his/her music is used and by whom, but more often than not,the publishing company and the record company have the say.

The performance of the song was probably legal assuming that the RNC convention organizing committee did their job properly, then they most likely obtained a a performance license from the organization representing Heart (either ASCAP or BMI) to play songs at the convention (most likely a blanket license).

The context of the performance caused Heart to protest the use of the the song. The agreement that Heart has with the licensing organization may or may not allow them to rescind a specific performance license.

Assuming that Heart doesn't have the right to rescind a specific performance license, then it is within the RNC's legal right to continue to use the song. However, given the vocal opposition to using the song by the artist, it would most likely become a liability.

It is pathetic that we actually have idiots living in this nation. I always tell liberals, don't like it here, move to any socialist nation in Europe and you'll be much happier.

Furthermore, it is really a shame that too many rely on MSM and think that everything that is said is true. I guess liberals were never taught to do research on their own. The shrillness and name calling in the messages attacking the Republicans is very telling. Do you smell a threat in the air?
McCain/Palin have my vote without any music.
I really don't care what musicians or actors think. Few of them have any credible knowledge about world problems. I might exempt Jolie and a few others because they have at least made the effort to travel and learn about world issues. They don't just cash in on the American public then sit back and expect us to care about their opinion on world issues. How arrogant is that?
My guess is that the GOP will discontinue using the song. They don't need it anyway.

oddly, Seattle women and the women in rural America (which is the vast majority of American women)are probably pretty far apart in their views. Realistically, Seattle is not the yardstick by what everybody else is measured. Palin is not your "typical" Seattleite, she (other than being a governor) probably is your average Alaskan woman (since after two years she still has a popularity rating of 80%). Washington has a Governor that never had an approval rating of 80% because Seattle and populated king county the rest of the state do not view a vast array of issues in the same way. So, if you live in Seattle and think you have insight on what real people think, you're probably wrong.

By the way being a complainer does not make you a patriot. Being a Republican does not mean you are old or white. However being someone who thinks they should be entitled to everything they want without any responsibility, does make them a liberal. Maybe that is why you think of all republicans as old. A lot of people don't learn about responsibility until their brain has had a chance to mature.

To unregistered user:

After sorting through your diverse and various posts on this topic, I'm a bit confused as to exactly WHERE you stand and what for.

Your first posts seem to bash the Wilsons for wanting to maintain control over their music, which is what any musician would do. If they don't want a particular group or organization to use their copyrighted property, that is well within their right to do so.

Then, you seem to do a 180 and spout "I LOVE THE SISTERS WILSON!" for the same reasons you chastised them in the first posts.

The use of their song at the RNC was nothing more than a feeble attempt to cast Mrs. Palin in a light other than she's used to being in. But now, Sarah is in a whole different light...it's called "scrutiny". You seem to like her...I'm sure she appreciates your support.

I have a totally different view of her and that is caused by her track record as governor in which she casts herself as the Lord Protectress of Alaska but there seems to be a lot for which she has yet to answer...and I'm not referring to her various family issues except for the possible involvement of her husband in "Troopergate".

She's made a number of "mis-speaks" to this point and I doubt we've heard the last one yet...her stance about being for, then against (when it became unpopular), the "Bridge to Nowhere", her position on earmarks, the termination of the police chief and others as a "test of loyalty", and the firing of the librarian because she wouldn't go along with Palin's desire to ban certain books from the public library. And of course, her references to "God" wanting us in Iraq, or "God" wants us to drill in the ANWR and a new pipeline...we certainly don't need a far-right hard-core Christian conservative in the #2 post. Separation of church and state, remember?

The McCain/Palin ticket touts there's "A Change Coming to Washington", but after hearing her and McCain (who can't even come up with his own original buzzword), it looks like more of the same-old GOP tactics as usual.

I think their oratory has proved that the Republicans have nothing to offer but more of what we've suffered the last 8 years. And a bulldog with lipstick isn't likely to change that at all.

To those who keep singing the wonders of Palin's 80% approval rating as Alaska's governor:
It would be easy for Gregoire to get such a rating. All she'd have to do is mail $1200 government checks to every resident.

Fascinating fact: When Palin was mayor of the large metropolitan area of Wassilla, population about 5000 then, she hired a DC lobbyist close to indicted Senator Ted Stevens. The take for Wassilla was big - about $4900 of federal pork for every resident. This is like Seattle getting over $2.7 billion for every resident or about $3.5 billion every resident of Washington state.

Even more amazing fact: When Palin was elected mayor of Wassilla, it had a balanced budget and zero debt. When she left, Wassilla had $22 million in debt! Ain't conservative Republicans great!

What is the alternative to being a "real" person? A 'droid? Something knitted out of worsted-weight wool? An ice carving? LOL

We're all "real" people. Really.

I have lived in the following states and countries (in no particular order): Washington, Oregon, Louisiana, Alaska, Indiana, California, Mississippi, France and Alabama.

Which qualifies me as "real"? Biloxi or Paris? Goleta or Tuscaloosa? Dutch Harbor or Indianapolis?

One person, one vote. Out of many, one. That's the way the Founders of our great nation saw it. There is no one kind of "real people". What makes America GREAT is the collective wisdom of every citizen in our democractic republic.

AMERICA is ALL "real people", from sea to shining sea.

And should somebody dare question Sarah's "qualifications", whoa...the response from the McCain camp: "This nonsense is OVER!" What a class act that...isn't. If she can't face the questions now, she's in for a real rough ride in the coming months.

The fact that Democrats (just to enlighten you, I'm not a Dem) can honestly say "We're not Bush" is definitely something in their favor and to be touted. Even the McCain camp is trying to distance him and them from Bush...ahhh, but it's a wee bit late for that now. His voting record defines him for who & what he is.

It is what it is...

"To unregistered user:

After sorting through your diverse and various posts on this topic, I'm a bit confused as to exactly WHERE you stand and what for."

"Zephyr77 ~
Do you really not realize these posts are from different people?
Also, you are spouting the same rhetoric that is being used to smear Palin by the Obama camp. Much of it is made up and it won't work this time.
You used it to get rid of Hilary but Sarah won't be taken down by your smear campaign."

Oh...foolish me...two (or more) people using the same poster name? Zooks! Who'd have ever thought of that?

Check your facts, whichever "unregistered user" you may be. The McCain camp has already stated that the smears to which you refer did NOT come from the Obama/Biden camp. When asked who in Obama camp made those statements, the McCain spokesman couldn't come up with anybody's name.

And Sarah won't have to be taken down by smears...she's quite capable of running herself right out of the race.

We have countries who want to nuke us, people. (And not because of anything Bush did - it goes way before that.) Obama is a likeable guy, smart, refreshing even, but is he experienced enough to keep us safe? When you're scrambling to find your duct tape because some hostile country was allowed to get out of control and they're sending up their nuclear weapons, you will rue the fact that you didn't vote for someone like John McCain who has the experience to be our Commander in Chief. My opinion...
