GOP says Gregoire wrong to go to DNC

Stewart Powell is in St. Paul, Minn., for the Republican National Convention. GOP gubernatorial hopeful Dino Rossi, as well as Republican Reps. Dave Reichert and Doc Hastings, are skipping the convention.

Democrats say especially in the case of Rossi it's because they want to avoid being associated with an unpopular party. Republicans, Powell reports, counter that Rossi is too busy in Washington to spend several days in Minnesota.

Fredi Simpson, a member of the Republican National Committee representing Washington state, told Powell that Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire should have remained in the state rather than joining fellow Democrats in Denver.

Rossi is skipping his party's presidential nominating convention to underscore that he is "working for his state and working for the people of Washington,'' Simpson said.

"That's something the governor should have done as well. Working in the state is far more important than taking part in the national political scene. The governor is not running for a position in federal government.''
Simpson continued: "We don't need a governor with a grandiose approach, saying, 'Here I am at the Democratic convention.' We need a governor who shows the voters of Washington state that we're working for them.''

Luke Esser, the state GOP chairman, said Gregoire's role at the Democratic convention had gone "largely unnoticed'' back home in Washington state.

"Frankly I didn't see much about it,'' Esser said. "The Clintons did a good job hogging the spotlight.''

UPDATE
Gregoire's campaign spokesman, Aaron Toso, defended Gregoire's roll in Denver:

"It is a little naive to think national politics don't have an impact on our state," Toso said. "We need a partner in Washington. That is why it was so important to nominate Barack Obama."

Gregoire's role in Denver included accompanying or introducing Michelle Obama at a series of high profile events, and being one of five women Democratic governors honored by a reception at the Denver Art Museum sponsored by the Wall Street financial firm JP Morgan Chase.

Gregoire won the prominent convention role in part due to her well-time endorsement of Obama for president on the eve of the state's Feb. 9 precinct caucuses that Obama swept with two-thirds of the vote.

Kelley Steele, spokesman for the state Democratic Party, said:

"After eight years of the most corrupt and incompetent administration in American history, it's both sad and comical that Rossi and his allies think attending an ice cream social and munching finger food at his closed, Bush-style campaign events constitutes 'working in the state.' The truth is that Rossi will do or say anything to obscure the fact he's a Bush Republican whose agenda is dramatically out of step with that of Washingtonians."

Rossi wishes to distance himself from G Bush and is staying away from the GOP convention. NEWS for Dino. The Dems don't have that problem. Get over it.

So, to be clear, when an administration is wildly unpopular, local members of the same policy avoid the national scene while local members of the challenging party embrace the national scene? Why is this news? At least Rossi and Gregoire are both smart enough to know what's in their best interests, I guess.

Dino should roll as an independent, cause whenever you see[R] or [GOP] next to one's name, sorry, it makes one think of the current party and it's sorry state of affairs...whether you go to the convention or not...

Wow, what audacious spin! In the first place -- Gregoire is a super delegate so has a vote. Secondly, she's head of the D party in WA. Thirdly, Rossi would be there with bells on if it were four years ago. But he be an Obama man now, haven't you heard? R spinning is taking on the quality of Saturday Night Live. We also have them talking up Sarah Palin, a small town mayor and now presider over the oil welfare state they call Alaska. Why, she's as experienced as Obama, doncha know?

Wow - the Republicans are really getting desperate if this is all they've got. "The governor went to her own party's national convention - the horror!"

Pulleeze... Just one more indication that the GOP thinks voters are stupid.

Dino who..??..

The repubs aren't that great at effectively "distancing" themselves from Bush, because in Washington State, it's more like they thought we were stupid enough to believe the pretense that, after all, they're secretly paultards. That's even more hilarious than the original tardian net forces. I think.

The repugnants are like rats leaving a sinking ship and expect all to act the same cowardly way they do. However, I can understand why dino and his ilk are running as far and as fast as he can from this mess. A doddering old man and a bible-thumping prom queen as the presidential wishfuls of his party. I didn't think it possible to sink from the all time low of bush and cheney....but they have.

I think it's WONDERFUL that Governor Gregoire took time out from her job and responsibilities to go to the Demo Convention. EVERYTHING in the State of Washington is in A-1 shape. So why shouldn't she attend? An absolutely flawless administration needs no oversight.

Hel-lo, Dino. GOVERNOR Gregoire went to the Democratic National Convention because she actually had a vote in the nomination of the next President of the United States as well as other responsibilities. The reason you didn't go to your own convention couldn't have anything to do with the fact that you didn't have a vote, now could it?

Dino,Dino,Dino... It must be tough being ashamed of what you are.... a repubiccccc uuuu... go ahead say it Dino... A republican. I'd be ashamed too! You know I'd vote for Howdy Doody, before I'd vote for you and any of your slimy, fear mongering, corporatist ilk. After all your of a party of tired old ideas, based on racism and hate.

Interesting comments.

"contending they (the Republicans and Rossi in particular) were showing greater concern for voters"

"Esser added, "I think it's entirely appropriate for him to be working to reach the people of our state who haven't decided whether to vote."

"And Reichert is "pursuing a much higher calling"

"Rossi is skipping his party's presidential nominating convention to underscore that he is "working for his state and working for the people of Washington," Simpson said.

Really makes them sound so, so, um, high minded, like they were really involved in actual state business, like maybe getting some medics and National Guard ready to go to New Orleans to help out after the hurricane hits, or something.

Simpson said, "working for his state and working for the people of Washington," about Rossi. My question is, what was he working at that was the state's or my, as one of those people of Washington, business or interest?
Was he working to save someone's house from foreclosure?
How about helping someone with no health care find a way to pay his medical bills? No? Ok, maybe working to find someone a job after they lost theirs?

And my answer to those questions are? Oh good grief no, he was out there pandering for votes!

Try again Mr. Simpson and all you others in the Republican party . Next time try a little honesty and quit trying to sound like heros. It won't work.

Ok Rossi is staying here to work for the state... doing what exactly?

I would have been disappointed if our govenor had not gone to the DNC personally.

Rossi is too busy bending over for campaign contributors. That must be hard work.

Sounds like Rossi is ashamed of being associated with the republican party! The people of Washington aren't stupid. We know that the GOP (republicans) have gotten our country in to a mess that will take leaders on all levels to fix. You Mr Rossi is NO Leader, just a follower of big money of Medina.

This thread exhibits a shocking lack of your garden variety wingnut troll ! Must be some sort of trick.
Maybe they sent the trolls off to the convention.

The Republicans are saying it is wrong for Governor Gregoire to go to the DNC and that Rossi is staying in Washington to work for the people. How outlandish! The Governor went to the DNC because she is a super delegate and has a vote. But most importantly she was there working for the people of Washington to get a real partner elected as the next President. And, Gregoire has been working for the people of Washington for the past four years. Dino is not going to the Republican convention because he is trying to hide the fact he is a republican and is trying to avoid any association with the failed policies of the Bush administration.

For the love of god, the Repugnicans are cancelling their own convention so that whatever small percentage of the American public is confused, befuddled, or just plain evil enough to vote for them won't be deterred by actually hearing them spew forth the usual bag of lies designed to get more for the haves and have mores they call their base. This, in turn, will allow the corporate owned "liberal" media to dutifully regurgitate thier lies in a more palatable form and post "poll" numbers that show a "dead heat" election easily thrown by rigged Diebold voting machines.

Rossi isn't staying home to "work for his state," he's running for public office. The only person he's trying to help by skipping the Republican Convention is himself.
