The primary - analysis

Gov. Chris Gregoire said Tuesday she expects her margins to increase over GOP rival Dino Rossi from the primary to the November election.

"We've got momentum. I expect Barack Obama to win in November and I expect to be his partner," she said. "It's going to be a Democratic movement…Barack at the head of the ticket is going to be important and he is going to bring out Democratic voters."

But Rossi remained confident.

"We've had a very strong showing so far," Rossi said. "During the 2004 (primary) campaign, I received just 34 percent of the vote. What matters is we are in the top two and now onto the general election."

Democratic strategist Blair Butterworth was one of the few willing to say Tuesday that the primary could make or break the candidates.

"In terms of the governor's race, if Rossi finishes 5 percentage points back, he's toast," Butterworth said. "There is no way he is going to recover. (Gregoire) is going to get huge amounts of money, she'll have a huge amount of momentum."

I don't think it is a sign of confidence that Gregoire is counting on Obama's coattails to get re-elected.
How sad a governor is she when a sleazy lightweight like Dino can seriously challenge her?

How sad a political party is it to repeatedly back "a sleazy lightweight like Dino"? And then to persistently challenge the election outcome even after being laughed out of court by their own hand-picked judge?

How sad is it that supporters of the Governor can only call her opponent names rather than talk about what she has accomplished- like raising state spending 33% in four years- and hiking the gas tax by 15 cents but failing to pay for projects-

If the gov has done so bad, why did Fortune or Forbes rate the state so high in its rankings of best places to do business. Now if McCain gets out of the way and lets Boeing win the tanker deal, there will be another 4000 jobs in the state. Considering the status of the national economy and looking at other states' fiscal situations as a comparison, we are doing well and Gregoire should get a fair share of the credit.
