Deadlocked in the 36th

A meeting of Seattle's 36th District Democrats' executive board Tuesday evening might be an omen for the staunchly left-leaning district, a sign of the friction that's likely up ahead.

Charged with making political endorsements, the board sailed down a list of candidates until -- just like many expected -- they hit the same wall Democrats have been railing against for most of this year: A choice between two popular political hopefuls.

In the 36th, that's John Burbank and Reuven Carlyle, both of whom are vying to fill the seat of retiring Rep. Helen Sommers.

The board failed to meet the two-thirds majority needed to pass a motion to endorse Carlyle, a motion to make no recommendation, and a motion for dual endorsements.

They moved on from the topic deadlocked. The issue will be turned over to voting members of the district at a July 10 meeting.

With the state's top-two primary ahead in August, it's likely that Burbank and Carlyle will share the ballot this fall. Republican Leslie Bloss has registered her candidacy, but hasn't raised much money or support in the historically Democrat-dominated district.

Earlier this year, 36th District Democrats refused to hold a nominating convention to declare either Burbank or Carlyle their official nominee. That duty was deferred to state party Chair Dwight Pelz, who named long-time-friend Burbank.

It will be interesting to watch the idiotic "Top Two" primary play itself out.

If you live in the 36th and have opened your door to find Burbank wanting to talk issues, there is no other choice.

It was the first time in 12 years (moved here) that a candidate was interested in my opinion and didn't solicit my donation. I know and like Bloss, sorry,

I'm not a voter in the 36th, but if I were my experience working with Reuven in the private sector would have me voting for John Burbank.

This race is the poster child for the moronic "Top Two" concept. 90% of the voters in the 36th District will get to make the same choice twice.

phinney77, do you see anything wrong with a politician being "interested in your opinion"? what the hell is wrong with us that we think that we have to ask our elected officials to carry out our will? if they're not working for us, who are they working for? do big corporations ever have to beg politicians for favors? our schools are crumbling, public transportation is a joke, food prices are rising, the housing market is in crisis, and you're suggesting we just keep on begging our elected officials to listen to us? i'd rather live in a democracy. i don't vote for politicians who "listen" to me. i vote for politicians who share my views and will work with me to enact those views. otherwise, i'm wasting my vote.
