Republican State Party Chairman Luke Esser says Democrats are way out of line with a new Web video ad criticizing Dino Rossi.
The video is the latest salvo in the war over campaign funding sources between Democrats and Republicans. The video hits Rossi, the GOP's gubernatorial candidate, because of his big-money support from the Building Industry Association of Washington. The BIAW is the most powerful conservative lobby in the state.
What has Esser so upset is that the music in the video is the theme song from "The Sopranos," HBO's popular series about a New Jersey mob family. Rossi is Italian American.
"Gov. Gregoire's political operatives have engaged in bigotry with this web video in order to shift the focus away from the ethical clouds surrounding Gregoire," Esser said in a statement. "This video is offensive to every Italian-American in this state and should not be tolerated.
"Furthermore, Gov. Gregoire, who dramatically announced last week that we had hit 'rock bottom' with negative campaigning, should call on her party's Chairman to immediately remove this video and offer an apology.
Democratic Party spokesman Kelly Steele tells The Associated Press the video was not meant to imply a tie to the mafia or organized crime.
Esser says the Democrats are trying to shift attention from Gregoire's campaign funding sources. As the P-I reported this month, Gregoire has benefited from big-money from tribal gambling interests.
UPDATE
The Democrats now say they'll remove the video and Rachel La Corte at The Associated Press reports that the Italian Club of Seattle sent a letter Wednesday to Gregoire, calling for removal of the video and asking for state Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz to step down.
Steele told the AP the video was not meant to imply a tie to the mafia or organized crime.
"It's a catchy song, which we thought jibed stylistically with our communication about Rossi's designated attack squad – the BIAW – who continue to pour millions into false and misleading attack ads against Gov. Gregoire," Steele said in a statement.
Steele apologized to DiJulio and "anyone else we may have inadvertently offended" and said the video would be replaced by one offering the same message, but a different song.
Steele said Pelz would not step down, something that DiJulio said he still wanted.

Um..ok yeah. IMO, that's REALLY reaching with that statement. It's bigotry because they use music from the Sopranos? Does that mean he's going to be calling up HBO and demanding a retraction from them as well? How, exactly, is it offensive? If this is the best the GOP can muster, they really must be running out of issues to talk about.....
