« The ABA speaks, refutes Nader | Main | Drudge for Obama? »
The May Elway Poll examines the presidential race and finds that Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both run better against Republican John McCain in Washington state.
The survey also suggests that the protracted Democratic nominating process has not created as much bitterness here as in other states, where many Obama and Clinton supporters say they would not support the rival candidate in the general election.
The Elway Poll found:
*Obama leading McCain 44 percent to 38 percent (compared to 45-39% in March).
*Clinton leading McCain 41 percent to 36 percent (McCain was ahead 41-38% in March).
Digging deeper into the survey of 405 registered voters in Washington state Elway says:
*Sixty-seven percent of Obama supporters say they would also vote for Clinton if she got the nomination (9 percent would vote for McCain).
*Seventy-four percent of Clinton backers said they would vote for Obama (13 percent said they'd back McCain).
*Fifteen percent of Democrats and 17 percents of Independents said they wouldn't vote for McCain or Clinton.
Elway also found that Obama does better with a wider cross-section of people than he has in recent Appalachian state primaries:
*Obama leads McCain in every age category while McCain bests Clinton among 51- to 64-year-olds.
*Obama led McCain in every income category over $25,000; McCain was ahead of Clinton with voters making more than $75,000 and less than $25,0000.
*McCain led both Democrats among voters who didn't attend college; Obama and Clinton led among voters who did go to college.
*McCain did better among men than both Democrats but was trailing both among female voters.
*Obama had a higher proportion of Independent voters than both McCain and Clinton.
The survey has a margin of error of 5 percent.
