After narrowly defeating a proposed postponement, the Seattle City Council approved a measure Monday afternoon that aims to encourage production and purchase of healthful, locally grown foods.
The "Local Food Action Initiative" asks numerous city departments to prepare analyses and make recommendations on various ways the city might encourage healthier eating – from zoning changes to additional resources for farmers' markets.
Councilwoman Jean Godden, who chairs the council's budget committee, unsuccessfully sought to delay the vote for three weeks while city staffers examine the potential costs of such studies.
"I'm not saying, 'No.' I'm just saying, 'Whoa!'" Godden said. "We need to be prudent."
The council rejected that move by a vote of 5 to 4.
Only Godden and Councilman Richard McIver voted against the resolution itself. McIver said the measure is "nanny state" government overreach.

Please fix the potholes and get the panhandlers, drug dealers, and miscreants off the streets, hire more cops and be sure the power doesn't go out. I don't need the city council "to study" how to get me to eat better or decide to allow a farmer's market on my street. This city is insane.
