Fiorina to China: Stop pirating

Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of HP, was in Seattle Thursday in her role as stunt double for the eventual Republican vice presidential candidate. She is the Republican National Committee's "Victory Chair," and mentioned as a potential running mate for Sen. John McCain.

The P-I got about 15 minutes with Fiorina, so naturally we asked her about things we hope people here really care about.

On trade? Keep it free.

"I think the Democrats are, unfortunately, playing on people's fears and throwing around protectionist rhetoric. But, particularly when the economy is weak we should let the American people know that free trade strengthens the economy," she said.

On Chinese copying of American intellectual property? Keep up "maximum pressure" at the government and corporate level using diplomacy, the courts and every other means available.

On H1-B visas?

"First we need to raise the cap."

But...

"We can't just rely on others to come here. We need to educate our children and retrain our workers."

Which she says McCain's education and worker retraining proposals would do.

(If you don't know, H1-Bs are visas for skilled workers to come into the U.S. Each year's allocation is typically exhausted within days of being opened for applications. Tech companies lobby every year to allow more tech workers in. )

As for the VP rumors, the answer wasn't a no.

"Well, you know, I think all the vice president stuff in inside baseball right now," Fiorina said. "I think the American people are focused on the price of gas and keeping food on the table."

Stay tuned for more...

Iblis,

Add a 50% tarrif to imported garbage containing toxic chemicals.

Imported garbage containing toxic chemicals sold as toys to American children will be loaded onto massive container ships that will be scuttled at the entrances to China's largest ports.

Fiorina and the rest of U.S. big business made deals with China. Did they REALLY expect ethical business practices in China???

On the plus side: I can finally get that set of Ping irons. Ping is the only golf club still made in the U.S. And I'm NOT going to buy a Chinese-made golf club.

"So Solly....."

Didn't know racism was part of the discussion here....

That said, why should we care about protecting the intellectual property of companies that don't manufacture what they develop here in the US? Doesn't it make sense to protect information by keeping it here? That way, the laws designed to protect IP will kick in, and the people who produce the IP item will have an interest in protecting it.

Is it a reasonable expectation to order a foreign government to protect IP produced elsewhere? Especially if the cost of developing the IP was pretty high compared to the cost of producing the manufactured good resulting from the IP? There will be plenty of people who will look at something like a CD and say it's so easy to produce, why should I pay so much for this?

It's so easy to protect IP. Just use it here, and anywhere else they respect IP rights. Manufacturing something in a country that doesn't protect that is just asking for it. HP and Carly Fiorina get what they deserve shipping work to China. Can't have it both ways.

Mr. J:

Quit "gloveling" in your chop suey, and quit calling anyone that makes a harmless joke a "racist".

While you're right when it comes to producing items in America, thus not only creating more American jobs, but having quality control over those items; the Chinese communists don't care who has "intellectual property rights". You see Mr. J, that's what they do: they lie, cheat and steal (did I mention murder?). Just because something was invented and copyrights were protected while on US soil, doesn't mean that the "Chi-coms" would "respect" America and not manufacture pirated goods like they have throughout their not so prestigious history.
By cutting off ALL trade with communist countries that have no respect for their own citizens, let alone the citizens of foreign countries that they send their shoddy unhealthy products to, is the only answer.

Had enough of the CEO president yet? Carly's business record is about as good as junior's. She crashed HP with that big merger with Compaq. Of course she walked away with tens of millions while employess lost jobs and shareholders lost their shirts and blouses. I'm so old I remember when government was for the little guy.

ConservativeBlogger and Iblis:

It's pretty easy to make fun of people's accents on these anonymous boards. Of course you've got a lot of cajones when you can make mean-spirited retorts without consequences.

Would you say the same thing to someone's face?

I didn't think so...

Racially-motivated mockery under the guise of a "joke" doesn't necessarily make someone a racist, but the jokes people tell can reveal a person's underlying psychological framework and impulses.

In any case, why don't we avoid lowering ourselves to juvenile discourse?

Yes, Carly's track record is abysmal. So awful was she as CEO of HP, and so little faith did Wall Street and the HP board have in her leadership that they booted her out (with her tens of millions of course). Who can forget?

And that's why I say: why yes, make her McCain's running mate (insert evil grin)

"Quit "gloveling" in your chop suey, and quit calling anyone that makes a harmless joke a "racist"."

For those who are reading this thread, this is the face of racism and how people who practice it are in denial. The "joke" is neither funny or appropriate.

Stick to the issues. Or, can we equate "American Conservatives" with "Backwoods Redneck Racists"?

How China or any other foreign country deals with its own people is a matter for the citizens of their respective countries. Where and how American corporations decide to manufacture goods they sell to Americans is another issue. If quality and safety was such a major concern, there would be a market for well made and safe goods in the U.S. I'd wager that any U.S. company who tried to sell competing goods on the premise that they are better and safer won't get much marketshare; buyers are price sensitive for commodity type items. Unless you are selling designer goods or some other niche type item, price usually wins in most cases.

It is common for developing nations to ignore intellectual property rights. When the United States was still developing, it was common for foreign (read: European) patents not be honored here. The international nature of modern trade makes it more obvious these days, but this is a very old pattern. The Chinese will start respecting international IP when they have IP of their own to protect.

American company lays off American workers, then opens factory in China, or contracts with Chinese manufacturer to produce the type of goods the company had been making in America. Chinese factory bosses cut corners and expenses and the result is products that don't meet our safety standards. Who do we blame when we buy a product from an American company that harms us? The Chinese of course, all of them! The American company is a poor victim. Is our children learning quality control?

ConservativeBlogger,

So let me know if I get this right.

You suggest that we have a trade embargo with China? So that means our governement will have to regulate all those USA companies making goods in China. This sounds like (a lot) more government to me. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that something you are personally against?

Black meet kettle. Kettle meet black.

ConservativeBlogger speaks (better late than never).

"Mr J" and" Jsnlin":
Perhaps if you were a little more concerned with the atrocities being committed against the Chinese people rather than a harmless racial joke, a few less forced abortions, a few less infanticides, a few less brutal murders against people whose only crime is wanting to be "free" might not be committed by the "Butchers of Beijing". Political correctness takes priory in your lives, too bad there is not a wee bit of room for "compassion" as well.

"MyMan"

There are reasons US corporations fled the USA: Huge government regulations, over demanding trade unions, taxes taxes and more taxes.

These corporations are being subsidized by the American taxpayer to do business in Communist China.

Bring American businesses back to the USA, and make it "unprofitable" to do business in countries that don't respect the human rights of their own citizens, as well as the health of our citizens.

"7Null_Seven":

"Developing nations?" "Developing nations"?? Communist nations don't develope, they have to put walls up to keep their people in! Since when is there incentive to work hard and prosper when the vast majority of the fruits of your labor goes toward the "almighty State"?

A little late, but...

Here's the problem, ConservativeBlogger:

The fact is, I believe the Communist Party is seriously messed up, something we can actually agree on. But there's a big difference between me and you. When someone like you takes the opportunity to make a "harmless racial joke", you lose all credibility. And it's comments like the one you made that the pro-Commies love to pounce one.

Why don't you try taking the high road and stop making "harmless racial jokes"? Take a minute and evaluate why you enjoy making racially-motivated slurs. It's not too late to change.
