Boyfriend lands former Seattle official in hot water

Former Seattle planning department head John Rahaim's boyfriend allegedly vandalized an historic publicly-owned mansion in San Francisco -- and set fire to a bed there, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

City bureaucrats will no longer be permitted to use San Francisco's historic fire chief's residence as temporary housing after a weekend incident in which the new planning director's boyfriend allegedly vandalized the landmark home and set fire to a bed, officials said Monday.

Lance Corey Farber, 47, remained in jail on suspicion of arson and felony vandalism after the incident Friday evening, in which furniture was overturned and a can of crushed tomatoes smeared on the floors and walls of the house at 870 Bush St. Farber was arrested later that night in San Mateo County on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Planning Department Director John Rahaim, who was appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom in September, moved into the downtown home with Farber in January after relocating from his job as Seattle's planning chief. Authorities said Rahaim was not home when the blaze was set about 8:50 p.m. Friday.

UPDATE: More info on smeared crushed tomatoes and other details here.

So finally, someone in Seattle has picked up on this news that the Seattle former Planning Director's gay lover trashed the historic San Francisco City owned Fire Chief's residence (that is not currently used for the Fire Chief but given to high ranking officials needing temporary housing) where he and John Rahaim where living. Then he was later busted for a DUI - Seattle Chiropractor, Lance Corey Farber. Nothing in the Seattle Times at all. Anyone up there in the PNW know why your former Planning Director, John Rahaim, left to move to SF? Was it the crazed bone-cracking boyfriend? Was he burning beds and smearing tomato paste on public buildings up there, too? Just curious!! Inquiring minds down here would like some background story on this!

just a sad story all the way around. Hope Mr Rahaim can pull through this with some dignity. Hope the bf gets the help he needs. Islandeagle - think you need a little bit humility and compassion in your life.

Island eagle is just saying what many people just think but know its not politically correct to say it particularly in Seattle and its obsession with being "nice" to everyone.

Lance Farber is an excellent chiropractor and healer. He has prsonally helped me tremendously. The move to San Francisco was a bit much for him as he was happy in Seattle. He was in love and was trying to do right by his partner by moving to SF. I know Lance and although I do not condone his actions I believe that his partner must have cheated on him , thus the symbolic gesture. I wish Dr. Farber well and hope that he will make it thorugh this and know that there are still people out here who care about and still believe in him.

I think that anyone who intenionally sets a fire inside a house adjacent to several wooden houses should be liable for there actions. He is a 47 year old adult that knew better. Lover spat or not you don't start a fire. I don't care if he was loved up in Seattle. He should of stayed up there if he wasn't happy. He put the San Francisco Fire Department fire crews in jeopardy.

Of course he should not have set the fire. The bigger issue here is alcohol. People need to know that alcohol and drug abuse brings out the worst in people. He is an extraordinary doctor and man. John obviously does not bring out the best in him. This is a toxic relationship.
