Now that Rudy Giuliani has officially withdrawn his bid for the White House, let the second-guessing begin. Well through the fall he led in almost every national poll for the GOP nomination, often by a substantial margin. And Tuesday he was fighting for third in
There were questions about his Florida strategy from the outset. And he was criticized for his incessant use of 9/11 and the War on Terror.
After the New Hampshire primary, my brother called me up from New York City. He's neutral on Giuliani, but was sick of hearing about 9/11.
"New York didn't need Giuliani on 9/11," he said. "When New York needed Giuliani was on 9/12 and 9/13 and 9/14; that's what he should be talking about. Those days after the attack, we just stayed home watching the television, listening to Giuliani. When we opened the windows in our apartment you could smell Ground Zero, at 80th & Lex ... He got New York back on its feet; opening the stock exchange was huge."
Would Giuliani still be in it had he talked about picking NYC up off the floor and getting it going again? Or played up his accomplishments as mayor and the US District Attorney for the city? During his time as NY's mayor its economy grew and crime dropped. With fears of a recession growing, Giuliani could have played up this experience (whether or not he actually deserved to take credit for it).
