It's about to be official: Rossi vs. Gregoire again in 2008

Dino Rossi, who lost to Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire by 133 votes in the 2004 election, will make a long-expected announcement Thursday that he's running against her again next year.

Jill Strait, who identified herself as a Rossi campaign spokeswoman, wouldn't confirm on Monday that Rossi is about to make his all-but-obvious candidacy public but other Republican sources confirmed it.

Strait said the Sammamish Republican will announce something at the Village Theater in Issaquah at 10 a.m. and at the Doubletree Hotel in Spokane at 4:30 p.m.
The theater is in the 5th Legislative District that Rossi once represented in the state Senate and was where he also kicked off his 2004 campaign.

Afton Swift, who ran Rossi's 2004 campaign, will manage his 2008 effort. His 2004 fund-raising consultant, Amy Barnes of Fundraising Partners Northwest, is also expected back.
Many of Rossi's top 2004 advisers, including J. Vander Stoep, a lawyer and political consultant who was former Sen. Slade Gorton's chief of staff, are at the core of his new campaign, too.

While no announcement of Thursday's events has been made, Republicans are quietly being urged to turn out for them. News media calls to Rossi's phone were referred to Strait.

"There's an event; I'm not sure what it's about. Can it be possibly that he's running for governor?" King County Republican Chairman Michael Young said facetiously, declining to confirm or deny Rossi's long-obvious candidacy.

The conservative political blog Sound Politics first reported Monday morning that Rossi would announce his candidacy Thursday.
Republicans have been fired up about a Gregoire-Rossi rerun since 2005, when a Chelan County judge validated Gregoire's election in a lawsuit filed by the state Republican Party after two hotly contested recounts. They stemmed mainly from ballot-counting foul-ups in King County.

Rossi has said he wouldn't decide on a candidacy until after he and his family had discussed it. He has been the only Republican considered to be a viable challenger to Gregoire.

The state Republican Party build-up to his candidacy has been carefully orchestrated.
The theme of the state party's annual fall dinner Oct. 10 was "Run Dino Run;" the keynote speaker was Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, chairman of the Republican Governors Conference, who personally urged Rossi to run. Rossi, as he has said many times, told the enthusiastic crowd that he was still evaluating whether to become a candidate.

Rossi and GOP officials have been circumspect about discussing his potential candidacy because of a complaint filed by the state Democratic Party and now being investigated by the state Public Disclosure Commission. It contends that a public policy foundation created by Rossi has served as an illegal front for his de facto campaign for governor.

The Forward Washington Foundation, bearing the same name as Rossi's 2004 campaign agenda, paid him $75,000 a year to be its part-time president and speak to friendly audiences across the state until he resigned last month, apparently to start organizing his 2008 campaign.

"Republican Dino Rossi has been campaigning illegally all year with his sleazy front group, so the only surprise here is that he's finally decided to follow the law," state Democratic Party spokesman Kelly Steele said.

Gregoire hasn't announced her equally obvious candidacy yet, either, but last month her fundraising for 2008 passed the $3 million mark and she has more than $2 million in the bank. Rossi will be starting from scratch to raise money, but the GOP's Young said he will be able to raise money quickly.

"I think that a lot of people have been waiting four years to write him a check," Young said. "You might even call it a pent-up demand."

Rossi soon will have an opportunity to catch up with Gregoire's campaign chest. As a state elected official, she will be barred from raising money from 30 days before the 2008 legislative session begins in January until it adjourns. The session is scheduled to last 60 days, which would mean a three-month dry spell for the governor's fund raising.

And Mike! McGavick was supposed to be a viable challenger to Maria Cantwell. Did Mike! even get 40%?

Yay! Rossi can lose again.
Hack repugnicans always lose Washington races because Washingtonians know republicans are shallow, money-grubbing scum.

Not to mention the illegal campaign funding he has been collecting for 4 years.

Back for more, huh Dino? Oh well - once again we'll point how out of touch your extreme agenda is with Washington voters.

Wonder if he still thinks we should privatize the UW and WSU...

Go Dino Go!!!!!

Don't listen to the righteous left wing communists that want the government to control everthing for them....let's get rid of that incompetent governor who stole the last election.

Hopefully this time we'll get a fair election and you can retake the governors seat that you won in 2004 and was stolen from you by the King County elections office.

BTW, Neil, there were two recounts, not three. The first was triggered automatically by the closeness of the race and the second was requested by the Democratic Party, as was their legal right. The Republicans could have requested another recount but chose to contest it in the press and in the courts instead, which only resulted in a few more votes for Gregoire.

As an un-affiliated voter (I've tried both parties, and I don't like either of them), I have to admit I've been greatly impressed by Gov. Gregoire's performance in office.

Rather than spend 4 years plotting a comeback, Dino should have addressed some of the real problems within our communities and worked on the grass-roots level to deal with them (examples--homelessness, battered womens' shelters, crime in South Tacoma--you get the idea).

Then, when the 2012 election comes along, he'd have some real credentials as a solver of the problems that are the most difficult to address.

Don't discount Dino to quickly. There are many of us who are tired of the tax and spend state government that are looking at providing a balance between the branches of government to help protect us. It won't take many of us to switch our vote to Dino to make a difference.

I wonder how many bribes Rossi needed from his contributors to set up a shell foundation to run this time?

Too bad, I think John McKay would have made a better governor than either of the candidates we'll end up with. Otherwise ...

Grudge match!!! Here we go ...

Thanks for Today's Chuckle. I needed a break from Prop 1 in the worst way.

Ha 'righteous'. He/she just complimented the so-called 'commies' while so desperately trying to put them down. Another victim of proper grammar-free talk radio.

I really dont care, I just despise polarization by people who are to hate-filled and refuse to use rational though.

Hmmm...

No offense intended, but I do believe that Mr. Rossi's chances of becoming the next governor of this state are the exact same as him becoming the next Czar of Russia, or the next Pope.

He is height impaired enough to enter the astronaut program, maybe he would have a better chance os some success with that…

Given that Rossi has publicly stated several times (IIRC) that he wasn't going to run, if he announces that he suddenly is, how many Repubs will jump on him for being a flip flopper like they did Kerry?

Honestly, no one's heard "Boo" from him until recently. What's he been doing since 2000 aside from possibly illegally raising money for a possible run at the governorship? Can anyone recall anything he's done for the good of WA or it's citizens since the election?

If you believe he's going to be a diffn't Republican than the current "Spend like crazy and not raise taxes to cover the difference and whoops sorry about the huge deficit" Republicans in the Bush Admin, I think you'd be sadly in need of a reality check.

Good thing they changed over to 'mail in ballots' wink-wink, it'll be much easier to stuff the ballot box this time, maybe Queen Christine can 'win' in the very first recount this time, eh comrades?

Dino Rossi is a chump by all accounts. I don't actually believe that he will do a better job than Christine Gregoir or anyone else will; at the end of the day they're all politicians and theives, liars and manipulators. There's nothing communist about being liberal or a democrat...they're capatalists just the same as the republicans are. I'm certainly on the liberal side of the sphere, but don't really care what name you put to it if we have a government that will aid the residents of the state. Money will be taken and spent, taxes will be collected. Sales tax will be paid on items, and will probably increase no matter who's in office, and inspite of the fact that sales tax is completly regressive. roads will continue to be in crappy condition, freeways will still be overly congested because people drive poorly (if you take the express lanes northbound every day, then you know that by jumping inot the seneca street exit lane and shoving your way in you'll cause a back up for hours...just wait in your own dumb lane... it would be faster!), people will continue to beg for change and food, and many of the state residents will continue to drive without auto insurance and live without health insurance. power will go out in windstorms and not be back on for days or weeks. none of it will change no matter who is elected or who runs. why be so petty and near-sighted? once elected they all get health care and a wage for the duration of their lives... do you think they actually care about the "civilians" fo the state, county or city? If Rossi cared, then he'd be doing something productive for the residents of washington while he waited to run again. has he done anything special, or just self-serving cr*p? politicians are just about the lowest form of human life, disguising their selfish coruption behind the guise of "caring". dumb.

Rossi running again is like (1) making water flow uphill or, (2) shovelling sand against the tide. Republican choosing to run in 2008 are political masochists - it's likely to be a landslide election for Dems and there's nothing Republicans can do about it (the smart ones will sit this one out and wait for 2012).

What has Gregoire done poorly?

#59667

Posted by RationalThought at 10/22/07 7:52 p.m.

Gee, Tom Heller, I never insult you. Why must you initiate the personal mud slinging?

I must say I had no idea you were a Republican. I didn't know they let Republicans live within the Seattle City limits. Guess you're the exception to the rule.

Rossi was lucky to only loose by 133 votes. George W. Bush was re-elected, most Americans thought the Iraq War was still winnable, and the Republican base turned out in droves to support their evangelical candidate.

Now the bloom is off the Republican Party's rose. More and more are realizing every day that the Iraq War is being fought purely for purposes of greed. Greed for the private contractors (Blackwater, which apparently doesn't pay taxes, and Halliburton, which gets all of our taxes) and greed for the corporate cronies who pick up the crumbs that fall through the cracks.

These macro-political situations trickle down to small potatoes races like governor and state legislator. If it's Guiliani, the religious right will stay home in droves, guaranteeing Democratic victories in all sorts of races.

When the voters get a sense of Rossi's beliefs, and when he stops talking through spokespeople and actually answers questions from citizens about how he feels on privitization of government services, they'll run away in droves.

133? Rossi will loose by more like 133,000.

If you're interested, Tom Heller, I'll put my money where my mouth is...

The anti-Rossi comments are quite comical.... weren't there a lot of votes (hundreds) from the same address (A King County office downtown) and as far as crybaby.... it was the Emperoress that began the counts... third time the charm right?
Oh, and "What has Gregoire done poorly?" SEAguy asks... how about setting criminals, DANGEROUS criminals free on an unsuspecting public?
And not all Republicans (if any) are money grubbing. I plan to run for the 7th Legislative District U.S. Rep position next year and I REFUSE to take any contributions. The public can vote for a man with good sense and the will to use it or they can keep the one they have (whereever he is).

I voted for Chrissy last time and after seeing what she's done with that, I am switching votes this time. I know that I am not the only one thinking this way.

What has she done wrong you ask?

Try the Viaduct fiasco (which still isn't settled). Or how about the State Board of Pharmacy mess...or even the large tax package she passed her first year in office. She seems to have a problem making the tough decisions but, absolutely no problem making the dumb ones. (the ESL grant is just another shining example of misguided priorities)

as far as the last elections goes....crying about it now is just stupid.

It's about time Rossi announced, Christine needs to be booted out. She has done nothing other than accept big bucks from Tribal interests and give them everything they ask for. How about a Governor that does something for all the people in the state not just a select few who seem to fill the democratic coffers.

#59702

Gregoire had a very good first term. Much was accomplished -- expanded health care for kids, Puget Sound cleanup plan, increased funding for public education, the transportation bill to improve our roads, the domestic partnership and anti-discrimination bills for gays and lesbians, welfare caseloads at the lowest level since 1979, low unemployment. Forbes Magazine even recently ranked Washington as the 5th best state for business. She definitely has earned reelection.

#59767

"Gregoire had a very good first term. Much was accomplished"
----------------------------------------------------
Much was accomplished, she proved to be as ineffective as I thought she would be. Spending is up, the Sonics are leaving, the viaduct is STILL not fixed, 520 is not fixed, traffic is still bad......small businesses are still being taxed extremely high.

For all you liberals who want the government to control everything for you, your governor will soon be defeated by a hard working stand up guy. You're corrupt governor will be defeated if the election is done fairly.

#59781

Posted by DAVIDRF at 10/23/07 10:54 a.m.

All of you people crying about the 520 bridge not being fixed or the viaduct not being fixed, grow up. It's not like Gregoire could wave a magic wand and magically produce a new viaduct and a new floating bridge. It's not solely in her hands as to what will be done with both of them. If that's the best you can grouse about, then I feel sorry for you. Gregoire wisely, IMO, put the viaduct decision back in Seattle's hands to let it be Greg Nickle's mess over his Tunnel Pipe Dream.

It's not Gregoire's job to try to force the Sonics to stay; why should she get invovled in what is essentially just an issue in King County?

And talk about the pot calling the kettle black....Rossi's not squakey clean either, as it appears he used his non-profit group for fundraising for a run at the governor's office that he adamantly had stated he was not seeking. Rossi is sorely out of touch with the average voter; and again, I repeat, what has he done in the past four years to keep himself relevant to the state of WA? But all of you Rossi supporters will see what you want to see; I think the majority of WA is happy with Gregoire's performance.

I for one, will be voting for her again.

#59823

Posted by usesomelogic at 10/23/07 2:02 p.m.

You're right, Gregoire could not use her magic wand.....but she could have used her broomstick (a little Halloween humor).

The Sonics are a bigger issue than just King County but considering what King County did in order to get her elected, she should try to at least return the favor.

Everyone knew who Dino Rossi was when he started the Forward Washington foundation. I figured supporting the foundation is basically supporting his next run at the Governors mansion. For those of you who are so upset about this......is it your money? Did you contribute to Forward Washington only to mysteriously find out that he was going to run again for Governor?

It's a political ploy and shows how scared the communist liberals are that they soon will be put in check by Dino Rossi when he is elected our next Governor. Finally some tax relief and common sense will be put in place.
