McCain's campaign crumbles; Is Giuliani next?

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is down and nearly out in his quest for the GOP presidential nomination.

Several factors contributed to the one-time Republican frontrunner's demise.

*McCain was never a favorite of social conservatives, a key voting block within the party. In McCain's 2000 campaign much of his "straight talk" appeal lay in the fact that he took on that faction, endearing him to independents and for awhile the news media. McCain realized he'd need social conservatives if he wanted the '08 nomination and he strongly courted them this time around. The plan backfired. He appeared to be flip-flopping, still never won over the religious right and his media coverage turned negative.

*McCain never got traction when it came to fund raising, which was a huge problem because the eventual winner of the race will likely spend north of $500 million.

*And, ironically, McCain was ultimately doomed by his close association with President Bush. Bush took out McCain in 2000, and the Arizona senator was bitter about what he saw as nasty moves made by those who backed Bush. It surprised some that McCain became such a strong supporter of the Iraq war. Most Republican candidates are now distancing themselves from the Bush administration's handling of Iraq, but McCain became linked in the public's mind with that unpopular conflict.

So all this is good news for Rudy Giuliani, right? Maybe not. The former New York mayor has been leading in the polls, but an unannounced candidate- the actor-turned-politician-turned actor Fred Thompson - is gaining on him and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is running strong in Iowa and New Hampshire.

As the National Journal writes in its rankings of GOP candidates:

Mr. Electable (Giuliani) has map-changing capabilities that no other Republican would dare claim. And he's still popular among Republicans, as evidenced by those national polls. But while everyone's been obsessing over how low John McCain will go, it's Giuliani who has seen his national numbers cut in half since April, and his leads in Iowa and New Hampshire erased by Romney. Does Rudy Inc. realize that the window is closing on his own ability to define his biography? Get some paid media up soon, Mr. Mayor.

Mitt Romney is the only Republican who can win. Giuliani is a one note candidate. Thompson is an empty suit. Romney has real accomplishments. He's the most optimistic candidate on either side. Romney all the way.

Romney is no conservative. He's pro-choice. I hate to say it but Paul is the best cantidate :-\

Romney's resume is impressive, and he continues to out think and out organize the other republican candidates.

Romney is the best candidate to improve America's economy, education system and global image. Despite some of his changes, he is clearly the the person most likely to lead our country to success and prosperity.

Romneys record as guvnah does not reflect what he says he would do for the country. Look at his record. He is a flip flopping fish. I'm voting for Ron Paul only because I think he is the only candidate that can distinguish the Republican party from the Democrats and regain respect for the Republican Party.

You do not get it do you? McCain loses because of his aversion to free speech,(McCain-Feingold) and his support of amnesty for illegal immigrants. His support of the president in Iraq is the only reason he had any support.

Looking beyond the whole "Mormon" issue, Romney is definitely the best candidate. He has my vote!

Romney in the White House? Not a chance. Please make him your candidate, it will make victory even easier for us Dems.

Of all the people currently in the fray on both sides, Ron Paul looks the best. This country needs some one like Ron to claim back its moral high ground

Anytime someone uses the phrase "you do not get it", you know they're probably a neocon, robotically programmed by the likes of Hannity or Limbaugh, or even (Lord help us) Coulter.

It's Romney vs Thompson. In the primary, Guliani and McCain lose with the GOP base. Thompson will be suspect because of 2 issues: he has never been an executive of anything (congressmen typically don't win presidential elections) and he has cancer. Thompson has 2 strengths however. He has name and face recognition, is from the South, and has a "folksy" manner, which Americans like. Romney isn't so folksy, but is good in front of a camera. He will be strong with proven executive leadership and is more articulate. Americans don't care about specific faiths, except for a minority of bigots left over from the prejudiced American past. For the GOP, it's going to be last standing: Thompson vs Romney.

Ron Paul is the best candidate to reagain this country's moral high ground? If that's what you believe, you probably voted for George Bush when he was runnung and you probably believed that HE would regain the country's moral highground (when we hadn't yet lost it) and you see how well THAT worked out! Get a Democrat in there so maybe we can get our Habeas Corpus rights back and repair the damaged U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights that made this country great for over 200 years.

I know a lot of Democrats who are wishing Michael (Ross Perot) Bloomberg will run.

Ron Paul ALL the way! I am a former dem I reregistared as a republican just so I could vote for RON PAUL in the primary! He can unite this country. He is the only Republican who stands a chance against the dems period. He has always voted against the war which the dems for the most part can't claim. His voting record proves his integrity to vote with the constitution even if it's against his party. STOP voting for a party and start voting for your country! Cut the head off of the federal reserve!Go to Youtube and watch his speeches. Let's take our country back. Also a great question to ask these other candidates. What % of the money they have raised came from special interest? Ron Pauls money has ALL came from WE THE PEOPLE. He will not be bought!

Poster # 40427 hasn't a clue. Nobody is a stronger advocate for the constitution than Dr. Ron Paul. No donkelephant in the race is further from the super-connected likes of George W. Bush. Dr. Paul has a life that is consistent with his voting record, all of his beliefs are consistent with his voting record. Name one democrat who has not made any moral compromises for the sake of politics. Name one democrat who has studied economic and foreign policy as extensively as Dr. Paul. Maybe poster # 40427 should consider voting for a candidate instead of a party.

40427 Responding to 40476:
First of all, I'm a Democrat who has voted for Republicans in the past because I liked their individual stances. I doubt you've ever voted for a Democrat in your life. Secondly, here's Ron Paul's voting record:
http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=BC031929
You say " Dr. Paul has a life that is consistent with his voting record, all of his beliefs are consistent with his voting record." You've gone through his every vote (see link above) and you can say the above without a shred of doubt? Are you this guy's pastor? I've looked through his voting record by category (notice you can do that on the above site) and I'll grant you he's better than some in his party, though he's against stem cell research, and he's not too good on environmental issues. But I have to admit he voted against the Homeland Security Act, he voted against the No Child Left Behind Act and voted against the Medical Malpractice Liability Limitation bill. (Are you cringing?) So he does seem to have some scruples. There were some other ways he voted that I wasn't too crazy about, but yes he's probably the best of the conservatives. (Not a peep from him on the senate floor or in the debates about the loss of Habeas Corpus though. Are you aware that based on language that was slipped into the Homeland Security Act, you as an American citizen can be arbitrarily declared an enemy combatant and made to disappear by the government and be hauled off to some secret jail never to be heard from again, just like in good old communist Mother Russia back in the fifties and sixties?) If you haven't been following this, then YOU don't have a clue about the rights that have been systematically stripped from you by the current Administration and the Republican dominated congress over the last six years. You say "name one democrat who has studied economic and foreign policy as extensively as Dr. Paul." Bill Clinton, Bobby Kennedy Junior, Al Gore, the list goes on…………….there's plenty of intelligent people out there. You're just not used to that sort of thing anymore with ‘you know who' heading up things. You say "Name one democrat who has not made any moral compromises for the sake of politics." I would dare to venture Dennis Kucinich as a likely answer. But guess what? (and here's point three) Dennis Kucinich, just like Dr. Paul, doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the nomination for his party. I saw the way the rest of the Republican candidates pounced on Paul like a bunch of vultures when he actually spoke some truth in the debate. No, I'm pretty confident that Fred Thompson will be the chosen figurehead. That's who you're going to have, so Ron Paul is a moot point. Here's Thompson's record: http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=22003 No Republican, no matter who gets the nod, will even try to get universal healthcare for the U.S., and corruption and scandal has run rampant in the Republican party. (Is eliminating the votes of hundreds of thousands of servicemen by "caging" the way to support our troops? Do a Google search and read up on it if you don't know what I'm talking about.) So as far as I'm concerned, the Democrats are the clear best of two, not so great, choices. Happy voting.

McCain has demonstrated EXCELLENT decision making- especially with Palin.

Libs truly see this election as their best year ever. And it should have been.

But they chose Obama with suspect credentials at best, and with Dope and Cocaine usages (per his own admissions) at worst.

... and when will Obama tell us more about his drug daze?
