Joel Connelly: A Focused, Fighting Kerry

At Espresso Vivace on Capitol Hill, Sen. John Kerry inhaled a cupcake, and then set out to demonstrate why he isn't a cupcake.

The Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee has obviously brooded at a "lost summer" in which the Bush campaign landed body blows, labeled him weak on national defense, and manipulated a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that demeaned Kerry's record in Vietnam.

Awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts as a Navy lieutenant, Kerry had basked in accolades from old Navy buddies as he swept through the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary.

When slimed, even by Republicans who never served, he remained curiously detached.

The Kerry witnessed on Capitol Hill yesterday was spoiling for a fight. It was as if Kerry were heeding the famous World War II command of Adm. Bull Halsey: "Attack, repeat, attack."

Counterpunch might be a better way to describe it. Late Monday, in California, Kerry stumbled while talking to students about Bush, his advisers, and the administration's "failed strategy" in Iraq.

"You know," Kerry told them, "education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't you get stuck in Iraq."

He meant to say that Bush was stuck in Iraq. Instead, the remark appeared to condescend toward the U.S. troops who have been fighting --- and, in increasing numbers, dying -- in a far-off land.

The White House seized on the remark yesterday. Bush called it "insulting" and "shameful" and said that Kerry "owes" the troops an apology.

But the diffident Kerry of two summers ago reacted like a South Boston brawler -- the same Kerry that used eight debates to come from behind and thrash Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld when the two faced off in a memorable 1996 Senate race.

He declared that Bush should do the apologizing, for invading Iraq on false pretenses, failing to provide troops with adequate armor, and left the U.S. "bogged down" in harm's way "as a result of arrogance and ignorance."

He made an acid reference to the five deferrments received by Dick Cheney during the Vietnam War. He talked about billions of dollars "wasted" in Iraq on no-bid contracts. And, referring to Bush, declared: "The president always sets up a straw man because he won't debate a real man."

The jury -- America's voters -- is still out. But 2006 may go down in America's political history as the year that Democrats stopped acting like wimps.

Kerry's response yesterday was immediate and from the gut. A pro-Democrat veterans group has run graphic TV spots showing the consequences of not providing troops with adequate body armor. The Democrats' Senate nominee in Virgina, author and Viet vet James Webb, has run a spot in which President Reagan praised his military service. Veterans are shown saluting a Democratic House nominee in Pennsylvania, a retired three-star admiral.

Espresso Vivace has the scene of more than one kind of wake-up on Tuesday.

So "Cut and Run" Kerry has a problem with Republicans who never served criticizing his remarks about the non-educated winding up in Iraq. Well, I have a problem with Kerry.

I happen to be a Republican who has also served 30 years in the Army which included a FULL tour in Vietnam - meaning I'm not one of those "chickenhawks" that the left so despises. I fully agree with both Bush's and Snow's statements on Kerry's remarks. On more than one ocassion Kerry has shown a lack of respect to those who have served. He has morphed into a nasty, bitter man who hasn't been able to come to grips with the fact that he was bested in 2004 by a man who he perceives as intellectually inferior. So he travels around the country throwing anti-Bush temper tantrums. What a twit.

How did "Vietnam" turn out for ya? I know for me it meant losing friends to a inane war. Still, I find your 30 years of service commendable. It is just that I find it odd that when people disagree they need to be labeled a "chickenhawk". Good luck dealing with that guilt you want us all to feel.

Bush is a disgrace to this country...he never served in Vietnam (and neither did Cheney)...How many courageous U.S. soldiers have died because George Bush LIED to take our country into a war we did not have to fight.??...Bush could not have been re-elected without Karl Rove's dirty tricks (and the smearboat veterans distortions). At least John Kerry served his country in Vietnam. Kerry's remarks are being taken out of context by the right-wing talk show folks. Yet, Kerry was trying to say that IF we had a President that did his homework and understood history (and the Middle East) then we wouldn't be in the Quagmire that we are in over in Iraq. George W. Bush will be remembered as the worst president in history -- too many innocent folks have died in Iraq, record deficits, a pathetic response to Katrina, no effective energy policy, and a total failure to deal with global warming. Mr. Bush will not get my respect until he resigns...He is unfit for command.

First, thank you fluffdoc for your service...it keeps the "chattering classes" (so-called elitists, like Kerry, Kennedy, Connelly, et al) free and able to spew their idiotic venom. Secondly, WATCH THE VIDEO...ya, and then see whether you think he meant what he said; of course he did.... He's a two-faced liar, pure and simple. They let out what they really feel about America ofttimes, then they try and run for cover. Thank God the real Americans can recognize the pretenders like Kerry.

why can't you understand? Kerry was insulting BUSH, not the troops. he should have said "when you don't study, YOUR ADMINISTRATION gets stuck in Iraq". get it??

Bush "cut and ran" from Afghanistan. troops there are under international command, the Taliban has made a resurgence and the country produces more heroin than the world can consume. nice work, GWB.

The thing is, by the majority of evidence, Kerry is NOT insulting the troops.

You base your argument on this fact, and so your statement is a fallacy--can't you see that?

The facts are that no matter who the sitting president is, republican or democrat, the idiots still keep rising to the top. In my short 57 years of existence, I've seen sitting presidents of both sides proclaim the virtues of peace and promptly follow it up with foreign policies and actions that defy a reasoned approach that considers what the impact will be not just on us, but on our allies and friends.

Get a grip. America suffers from an image problem no matter who's in the White House because we always make the same mistake - assuming we know better about governance than some one else in a faraway land.

Kerry is absolutley right. Bush lied to get us into the war so he and his buddies could bilk billions of dollars from US citizens. No bid contracts for billions of dollars to the vice-president's company??? President Clinton lied about an indescretion and harmed his reputation.... Bush lied to get us into war and got thousands of people killed and it costs the American people billions. How can we be so blind? Kerry fought, Bush ran. Bush is ignorant.

Why can't you pull your head out of your rectum long enough to realize that Johnny Boy is nothing more than a liar, a cut and run coward that has an imagination that runs wild. He lied when he came back from VietNam and played kissy face with Jane Fonda. He lied about all us VietNam Vets when he gave his famous speech to Congress accusing all of us of being Rapists, Baby Killers and of torturing innocent civilians. The truth is he is the only one that did these things, Not a soul in his unit can recall it ever happening. Funny Huh...Just like his bad joke. Screw John Kerry.

Kerry's Insulting the troops, he's a liar, two-faced, and idiotic. Wow. At least knee-jerk LIBERALS, unlike knee-jerk CONSERVATIVES err on the side of SAVING LIVES.

So I guess all you Bush supporters think things are going great in Iraq? That is how so many of you can allow yourselves to spend time on personal attacks instead of constructive debate?

I finally understand. A 'C' student for president who didn't serve and dosen't know his history supported by knee-jerking citizens who never bother to consider the other side of the coin. Too many years spent rigging the toss?

Wake up. At least we could learn a little from Britiash tactics in Iraq. The "stand-still and lose" military tactics we are employing in Iraq have NEVER led to success for ANY military force in the history of armed conflict.

Read your history. Or just read.

We need alternatives, not more finger pointing.

By the way, what about you Republicans cutting funding for terrorism defense to the most at-risk city in the country, New York?

Kerry is a politician trying to get votes. Would he gain votes by doing this? Therefore, a botched statement is more credible. The Republicans just latch to something and expand on it, even though this is against logic.

From his days of faking throwing his medals away, blaming the troops in Iraq of raping, breaking into homes etc. Why would anyone think he would change. What happened is he slipped up, he is pompous and egotistical who thinks the average person is stupid.

#15498

Wait a minute! Two people who really didn't serve, are trashing someone ( Kerry) who did serve, are sending many Americans to their death and killing many Arabs in the process. Face the facts folks, we were lied to about Iraq.

#15499

Posted by A Lonely Centrist at 10/31/06 8:06 p.m.

He did insult the troops. Perception is reality.

He apparently disdains those in uniform. I'm sure those who served with him knew this little character flaw (superiority complex?) about him, but maybe they can finally state the obvious.

Too bad he's not running for anything this cycle. He couldn't get elected dog catcher right now.

OK, typical right wing talk show host behavior. Soldier raping girl in Iraq cannot happen. Prosecuting such behavior is not supporting our troop. Where is America's moral value? Soldiers convicted may face death penalty. This is Law.

Yeah, we get the joke in #15490... Sadly nobody else does. I'm a 2 time Iraq veteran and hate being away from my home, but these Chickensh*T comments that are so divisive give our enemies all the ammo they need. We look like idiots in the world eye not because of our politics and war but because of the in-fighting. Kerry needs to grow up. He lost! He won't win with the attitude that he has now. A democrat may very well win in 2008, but it will not be kerry

#15502

Posted by unregistered user at 10/31/06 8:16 p.m.

Some context:

"In his defense, Kerry said that his comment was a "botched joke" and that he was referring to Bush's intellect, not that of American military personnel serving in Iraq.

In a statement released only moments after Bush spoke, Kerry said: "I make apologies to no one about my criticism of the President and his broken policy that kills and maims our heroes in Iraq every single day. This pathetic attempt to distort a botched joke about President Bush is a shameful effort to distract from a botched war."

I wish that Kerry just retreats back to his estate and peels tomatos to turn them into ketchup. Blooper or not he just brought enough bissed (with their own party) patriotic value voters out to secure the Republicans at least the majority in the Senate. For the next week, every district with a contested seat will enjoy ad after ad with his one-liner rendering the abysmal record of this administration meaningless. What the heck were you doing in California anyway giving speeches?

#15509

Posted by axelwein at 10/31/06 8:35 p.m.

THIS IS THE DEAL.... i was in the service. And i was in when guys like bush and dick were running for cover... and yes that makes them chickenhawks!

Now this is the part that is going to hurt: There are very few great minds that end up in the service now days. They are largely driven by ecomonic circumstances, along with a large dose of ideology. Right wing ideology. And on top of that? The are 18 yrs old ! The first year of a "man's" life and ... probably the least informed part of a man's life! So, its not a bad thing at all that they get to hear something about the world from someone other than Rush or their pastor. Bottom line? Yep, they a lot of them don't have any choice but to enlist, and end up "stuck in Iraq". These poor "not to smart" kids up end up political pawns and fodder for men like George Bush who has never been successful at one thing in his entire life... nothing... except being a bully and a loser.

I know when i was in (3rd class PO - four years active) it hit me that my "reat" was hanging out there at the mercy of who was trying to get elected and who was running for cover. Nothing has changed.

One last note. I might be wrong, and if i am, i am not wrong by much.... but, not since Lincoln have we had a Republican who has been able to win a war. WIN a war!

So, i am glad Kerry (who i am not wild about by the way) punched this bully (Bush) in the nose this time. And if he sticks it out there again, break it. That will teach them to lie and distort the truth.

#15510

Kerry's slip is an unfortunate distraction. The sooner Republicans can get back to talking about the real issues, like flag-burning, gay marriage and establishing a moon-base, the better this country will be.

#15511

Posted by Terrorist at 10/31/06 8:42 p.m.

Personally I think Kerry deliberately misspoke in order to bait the White House spin machine. Kerry's latest response is priceless.

If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they're crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I'm sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.

I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq. It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.

The people who owe our troops an apology are George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it. These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor.

Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they're afraid to debate real men. And this time it won't work because we're going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq."

Wars are fought only by soldiers and bullets get thrown and people die.

Crap is thrown by politicians who play with wars like games that they think they can control - war is chaos and once unleased is not controlled.

Politics and War doesn't mix -

Once you've gotten to war then talking has already lost its battle.

It is the final step when there is no other solution. It shouldn't ever be taken on lightly but once the decision is made to commit to it then it should be finished as quickly as possible with whatever force is necessary to get it done without prolonging the agony of all involved.

Because once it becomes prolonged this so called modern sophisticated society we live in starts turning up its nose at the stink that it has created and begins playing the same blame throwing game that small children the world over have been doing since time began.

In America we have become a nation of losers that no country in the world can respect because when we come to their aid they know as soon as an election comes we are going to cut and run... why should any nation trusts us to watch their back. Why would anyone respect us for that?

I don't have any love for the war in Iraq - but it is a war and a nation of people depend on us now are because of what we have started. They are now watching us as a naition once again crumble in our resolve just as we have before when another nation depended on us and politics got in the way.

If we are going to cut and run then let's get it over with.

If we are going to win then lets at least commit overwhelming force to what is started and get it done quickly for everyones sake.

One way or the other it needs to be finished.

We are so petty and too busy pretending to care to ever be taken seriously again by any nation.

"Oratio Ultima Regem" (Engraved on French cannon by order of Louis XIV.) The last arguement of kings

It was put on a cannon for a reason. It shouldn't be that hard to understand.

Stew:

I didn't like the idea of this war from the very start. For so many reasons. Not the least of which was the folks that were going to run it.

But when we went in, i told my liberal friends that now our only choice was to go in so hard and big and sustained that we would never have to worry about being "bogged down" If you are going to kill, kill. Don't mess about.

Oh and on the subject of "let the generals fight this war"? LIncoln kept on firing Generals until he found one that could win. Lincoln was the Commander/Chief. George Bush can't admit a mistake and for it, he is killing a lot of our kids. And 3,000 is just the KILLED number.

For ALL that condem Kerry and his remarks and are gung-ho about fighting in a war which is BASED ON A LIE you DO belong in Iraq.

You go witness the carnage(sensless), you go participate in heat of the kill of the innocent(command given based on LIES).

Kerry is not a twit.. YOU ARE A TWIT for beliving LIES of this assanine leader. He won't accept blame for his actions. His press conferences are a JOKE!!! and lack serious substance.

We must stay the course ( of killing more innocent people ).

WAKE the CRAP UP you mindless nubs.

NO disrespect for the people that are in Iraq and people that have died. They died for the WRONG CAUSE - you TWIT.

John Kerry is a decorated combat veteran. He had the courage to speak out against war crimes permitted by our civilian 'leaders' during vietnam.

George Bush is a lying coward who jumped to the front of the line to get out of going to vietnam, then went AWOL, zll the while doing a plethora of coke and rum (in no particular order) until he was 40.

John Kerry has never, and will never denigrate our troops. He has consistently supported the troops his whole life, fighting in battle with them, and fighting in congress on their behalf for benefits.

George Bush uses the troops as a political prop, consistently denying them benefits and proper equipment for a war he deliberately scared America into, all the while cutting benefits for them when they ever do return.

So for Bush to even open his fat mouth about Kerry offending vets, I have to laugh. If he wants to talk about the troops and what he has done for them in Iraq - boy - he really is stupid. Lets talk about Iraq for these last few days, Dubya, and talk about how great things are going for them right now.

What did the Pentagon say today about the situation in Iraq, something about near chaos? Great Job, Republicans!

Typical Democrat BS. axelwein professes to speak for the military and yet he barely fogs the mirror himself. Not only does he use poorly formed english, he can't even figure out which side is which. He asks how the "left" can stand these people never realizing his error. Sounds strangely like the crap that Kerry is spewing. Rather than accept responsibility for what could genuinely be considered a slip, he points fingers at everyone else. Kerry needs to grow up. axelwein needs to go back to school. He doesn't speak for me and thanks to the men and women in the military, we have the right to say so.

A coward like George W. Bush is demanding an apology?

Where's my apology?

I want an apology from cowards like Bush, Cheney, Rove, and Tony Snow for lying the United States into a war that we didn't need to fight, and then playing politics with soldier's lives in order to prolong it.

I want an apology for leaving my legs in a pile of smoldering Black Hawk wreckage in Iraq six months after the "Commander in Cheif" declared "Mission Accomplished" just so he could win re-election.

I'm waiting.

Sincerely,
Major Tammy Duckworth, Illinois National Guard
