"Max"ed Out Recap

Picture
Max, our volunteers and myself decked out for Seattle Pride.

The MaxMobile has had a very busy couple of weekends (and since I was there for almost all the events, so have I!). I am going to try to wrap up all the highlights in one entry without going on for too terribly long...

Beginning a week ago Friday, we spent our afternoon in the South Lake Union area at the SLU Discovery Center to celebrate Take Your Dog to Work Day. Our partner, Vulcan, worked with us to put on an adoption event and pet food drive. Pet food donation barrels were also located at various SLU businesses including Whole Foods, Urban Beast, Scraps Dog Bakery and The Barking Lounge. In all we collected many barrelsful of food to benefit the more than 1,100 animal companions of our Pet Food Bank clients.

Saturday at Whole Foods in Redmond, the dog wash was a big hit. With the off-leash park at Marymoor so close by, many dogs stopped in after their afternoon romp for a quick tidy up. One dog in particular stood out: Harley, easily the largest Great Dane I have ever encountered. Fortunately for Harley, the baths were not priced by the square inch! Whole Foods did a great job (thank you especially Heather Kyle!) in putting on and promoting the event, and many of their suppliers generously donated pet items and food. We raised more than $430 in donations on the day, and Whole Foods gave us the surplus of the donated items for the Pet Food Bank!

Then it was to IKEA for Sunday's adoption event and their Summer Sale kick-off. We found six animals new homes that day, and a few tears of joy were shed as we said good wishes to a longtime Seattle Humane Society resident cat and a particularly sweet, smart and special dog named Jenna as they joined their new families.

This Saturday I had to skip the event at Georgetown's Artopia fest so that my dog Julius could participate in a flyball tournament at Magnuson Park (more on that in another post). But I was able to help with set-up on Sunday when the Max participated in the Seattle Pride Parade. I'll admit our decorating job did not compare with some of the other entries, but we had a great time participating nonetheless. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for braving the heat and marching along with us!

Max will be taking in a little downtime over the upcoming holiday weekend, but we will be back out there the following weekend to attend the West Seattle Summer Fest on the 12th (where we will be participating in the Pet Ponderosa put on by Next to Nature) and the Mill Creek Festival and Street Fair on the 13th. We hope to see you there!

But back to Jenna, the dog we found a home on Sunday at IKEA. I received the following note from her new family that I'd like to share. These are the kinds of stories that make volunteering and working for the Seattle Humane Society not just a worthwhile experience, but a joyful one.

"Hello Bill,

Thanks for all of the info. We have been scouting out the neighborhood, meeting so many neighbors and neighbor's dogs; astounding at how a dog can suddenly introduce you to people you presumably see every day. The course to the off-leash dog park on MLK at Massachusetts (Blue Dog) is incredible, and just right for a jog.

We have come to calling Jenna Lumi. It is Finnish for snow. She is perfect in every way; she walks right into her crate when it is time for us to go to work, she heels quite well on walks, has a passable knowledge of the rules and regulations of fetch, doesn't beg, doesn't bark, is fascinated by everything we do, and rightly presumes that the blanket laid on the floor in our bedroom is intended for her. Her temperament perfectly matches ours: athletic yet mellow.

Everybody compliments her, and say that they cannot believe that we got her from the Seattle Humane Society. We tell them to believe it, and to check y'all out. I'll definitely check into the agility classes at the Seattle Humane Society to see if they are something we can participate in.

We have made two trips to Mud Bay already, and have everything we could possibly think of.

Thank you for everything; especially for taking such good care of our darling Lumi in the time it took us to find her. She is a true and noble friend.

Yes, we shall see you and yours in the neighborhood."

Beautiful Lumi is bringing much joy to her new family.
