Meeting on Aurora Bridge fence Tuesday night

There will be a Aurora Bridge Fence Advisory Committee public meeting Tuesday night.

The meeting is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall at Seattle Pacific University.

State Department of Transportation officials hope to begin construction in summer 2009 on an 8-foot barrier to prevent jumpers. Ideally, they say, the project -- one that's long overdue, City Councilwoman Jan Drago has said -- would be completed the following spring.

At the DOT's first workshop with neighbors in January, many Fremont residents said they supported the idea. Most people only objected to the long timeframe or the appearance of the fence design.

People who can't attend Tuesday's meeting can review the latest design concepts and submit comments on the project Web site here.

Another committee meeting is planned for Oct. 21.

P-I reporter Mike Lewis has written more about the bridge and its history of jumpers.

Since the first jumper leapt from the span in January 1932, a month before the bridge officially opened, more than 230 people have jumped, including a former SeaTac City Council member.

I lived on the north end of thee Aurora Bridge 44 years ago, could not understand why there was no fence "then".
Pets were tossed off that bridge too.

When they blocked off the Space needle I hoped they would do the Aurora Bridge.
Didn't happen guess a view meant more then a jumpers life.
And before someone says "they'll just go someplace else to do it". Poppy-cock
That small glimmer of insight is still alive while they are still breathing!
