Aug. 27 vigil for Melissa Batten, domestic violence victim

Friends, community members and elected leaders will gather Wednesday Aug. 27 in Redmond to remember Melissa Batten whose estranged husband shot her to death in July.

About 150 people, including state Attorney General Rob McKenna, Batten's Microsoft colleagues and domestic violence experts, are expected to attend the vigil, the Eastside Domestic Violence Program said in a statement.

The vigil will start at 5 p.m. at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center at 16600 N.E. 80th St. in Redmond.

Batten, 36, died July 29 in the parking lot of her Redmond apartment. Her estranged husband then killed himself.

Batten was a lawyer who left her legal career to pursue her love of gaming. Most recently, she was a development engineer for Microsoft Game Studios.

People who plan to attend the memorial are asked to RSVP to Marsha at marshat@edvp.org or 425-562-8840 ext. 0.

To learn more about her death, read P-I columnist Robert L. Jamieson's story about her.

Very telling is that this press release assigned rock-star status to our AG, who like all good lawyers, loves to chase ambulances, or hearses in this case.

Now, no disrespect to this woman, no one deserves to die as a result of a relationship, but I find it odd that the EDVP solicits the AG to attend, then announces it.

This is the same AG and political candidate who even though we submitted voluminous peer-reviewed and published studies showing an equal incidence of DV....and asked for an advocate for male victims....he refused.

He seems not a bit interested when men die, like young Tomasz Matczak. Rob McKenna didn't attend his memorial......nor did the cops think it important enough to serve the TWO DVROs that our investigator uncovered that he got against that woman, Ms. Yelizaveta Buraya (yeah, I am naming names).

Instead of cooling her heels in the lockup, she goes free, after admitting to murder. Guess my bumper sticker is correct, there is no excuse for DV, unless you are a woman (or our attorney general)

The Geezer has spaketh.

What bothers me most about this is the public perception through the manipulation of false statistics. This case is the poster child for the injustices that occur against many good men. Take the Buraya/Matczak case as public example number one. Will the Domestic Violence advocates come running to his aide? Nope. In fact, they'll blame the victim saying he deserved to die as it was a case of self-defense. Curiously enough, the situation under which he died still is not known, even though he had tried to serve that woman with not one, but two DVPO's.

I'm going to go wash now.....

Both this victim and the man who was stabbed to death by his girlfriend late this summer had gotten protection orders issued from gumball machine family courts.

Proof that the DV racket is NOT about protecting victims but just about lining the pockets of the divorce industry and leeches that live off of grant money.

Let's flush these group think man hating feminists and work on solutions that actually protect people in real danger instead of running around yelling that cutting up a credit card is domestic violence.

There was a time when dancing on a grave was universally condemned. Apparently nowadays, political grandstanding is an acceptable use for the top of an in-use coffin.

You're hearing it here first - guaranteed that this female will kill again. Just like that guy who cut off the girl's hands in California after raping her many years ago. After release, he went to Florida and slashed a woman to death after raping her.

When arrested he was nude and covered with her blood.

I must say I am appauled at those of you who think this is grandstanding. I knew this victum personally and she was shocked at how little support there was for women who were being abused. The reason there wasn't enough support is that the community does not support the EDVP and other groups like them. The east coast is much more advanced in helping women and their children in this situation. Her intention once her divorce was final was to use her Legal and personal experience to become an advocate to help other women to escape this horror. She of course was never given that chance. But it had been her intention to help others to break free of a mental abuse or physical abusive relationship as she was trying to do. Don't judge so quickly it might just happen in your own backyard.

Would you like us to laugh now or later? Tell me EVDP, do you help men in need? According to these sites, DV is a problem for both sexes. Why didn\\\'t you grandstand for Mr. Matczak?

It appears that "The Geez" does not know with whom he is talking about when he refers to the AG as an ambulance chaser. It appears that "The Geez" does not know with whom he is talking about when he refers to the AG as an ambulance chaser. I work at EDVP and know that Rob McKenna has volunteered with our agency for 11 years. When he started he was not the AG but now that he is, he is able to help in a bigger ways of getting the awareness of DV in the press. He has worked on legislation that helps victims; some of his latest effort has been around a strangulation law to be recognized as a felony. Another was to get shared leave for those that work for the state time off to deal with the DV they face.
Statistically Men are victims 15 % of the time and women 85% and we do have services for Men that are victims. Whether it is our crisis line or our housing programs.

Its that obvious who you work for. The bias and obvious ignorance to the FACTS presented further embodies your position.

Where is your outrage over the Tomasz Matczak killing?

Where is McKenna's outrage over the Tomasz Matczak killing?

You people are riduculous the biggest problem is men abusing women. This is not a racist discussion this is about an organization that needs to be here and is doing a wonderful thing. If you are a man and need help you can get it but stop trying to ignore the facts which are obvious to anyone with half intelligence. The stats are MORE women are abused than men and there is more of a need than you want to admit. That is exactly why we need organizations like EDVP. Wake up! We all Know there is violence everywhere but this story is about abused women.

You statistics are spoon fed to the FBI and CDC for federal funding. None of it is based upon clinical studies, such as the ones listed above. It is you who need to wake up.

Where can men get support in the Seattle area?

Get a clue.
