UW's Emmert to serve on corporate boards

University of Washington President Mark Emmert is already one of the highest paid public university leaders in the nation with a compensation package that totals $905,000
annually.

But now it looks like Emmert will be bringing in $340,000 more a year, thanks to two corporate board appointments. Starting in just a few weeks, he'll likely start serving on the board of directors at Weyerhaeuser and Expeditors International, UW spokesman Norm Arkans confirmed earlier today.

At Weyerhaeuser, he'll earn $70,000 annually along with $70,000 in company stock.

And at Expeditors International, he'll earn $200,000 annually in stock.

The board appointments were approved unanimously by the UW Board of Regents. Emmert has attended a few of the corporate meetings already, though his appointment still has yet to be ratified by both companies.

Arkans said the regents determined two board appointments were enough -- that they wouldn't necessarily want Emmert to serve on more than that. He is expected to attend no more than six meetings annually at each company, but those meetings could last a few days.

It isn't untypical for highly paid university leaders to sit on boards. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported earlier this year that the only two public university presidents earning more money than Emmert in the 2006-2007 school year both sat on corporate boards.

But what do you think?

Will Emmert refund to the taxpayers the money we pay him while gorging at the corporate trough? If a guy who drives truck for the street department worked a second job while on the city time he'd get fired. It's obvious corruption at UW isn't confined to the athletic department.
