Abortion art at Yale was faked

A controversial art project at Yale University has the Internet buzzing, with some saying it trivializes abortion and others saying it's just plain gross and in poor taste.

Aliza Shvarts, a senior art major at Yale, told her classmates that she documented nine months in which she alternated artifical insemination with taking drugs to induce miscarriage.

The art project, she said, features video of the miscarriages and collections of blood from the process.

But as shockwaves reverberated around the world today following a story in the Yale Daily News, it was revealed that Shvarts' project was a fake.

"Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns," a Yale spokeswoman told the Washington Post earlier today.

"I hope it inspires some sort of discourse," Shvarts told the Yale Daily News before telling Yale officials the project was a fake. "Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."

The student paper's story didn't mention that Shvarts didn't actually induce the abortions. The paper has recieved so much Web traffic that the site has to convert the page to plain text just to accomodate the volume of readers.

What do you think of the art project?

Update: Aliza Shvarts wrote today in an editorial in the Yale Daily News that her art isn't a hoax, though she can't say for sure she was actually pregnant. Read more about the controversy in this news story, in which Shvarts says Yale's statement yesterday was "ultimately inaccurate." But Yale officials say the denial is all part of her performance art.

Even if she faked it I think she has some psychological issues. Seriously who even thinks up of something like this? Im kinda out there and weird and artsy, but I would never think of something like this, this is coming from a very controversial person myself. I think she needs to be evaluated and it is not cool to screw with people's minds like that. This whole thing makes me feel queesy. You should never call anything like that art, that is not what art is about. She could've gotten her so called "message" out in much better ways that would be effective, she didn't need to do what she did.

It's a pathetic use of an education. The school should be sanctioned for allowing this to produced, fake or not. She most certainly has an art advisor overseeing her project. Another reason I'm glad my kid can't get into an overpriced, leftist, anti-American, intolerant Ivy League school.

Whether we agree or not, find it disturbing or not, the fundamental aspect to this story is the artist's right to free speech and expression. If you find it offensive, then don't attend the exhibit, or read the articles. The arts have a long history of forcing society to look at it's own ugliness. I find the display disturbing, but the artist's message underlying message is important: it is her body, her life, her expression.

Rainbowgrower...I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. That you would think it's all right for her to have had several abortions and display them as art, or that she said she did and call that performance art? It is her body, her life, her expression, but when someone destroys an unborn child, that's their body, their life and I would say, especially after hearing the Dalai Lama in Seattle, it's certainly not very compassionate.

I don't guess she is any flavor of Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist. Gee, I wonder what religious background would place such emphasis on selfish expression at the expense of innocent life? Not even that art lover, Hermann Göring, could dream this masterpiece.

I've used both human and animal blood, not to mention menstrual blood in artwork before. I don't see the issue here. If you can hunt down a living animal simply to mount on your wall and call it art, why not this?

Yale, Yale, Yale, didn'g GWB graduate from Yale?

Seems much hasn't changed in the edumacation there - if the Skull & Bones is for our future leaders, and it comes out of Yale, God help us...

AvalancheChief, didn't John Kerry and Hilliary Clinton also graduate from Yale? Oh, but only John Kerry was part of Skull & Bones. Maybe less LIBERAL bias is warranted.

The difference is animals are animals and people are people. By your reasoning, it's OK for someone to hunt people and kill them. I'm sure you'd see the issue quite clearly if you were one of the hunted.

Artists freedom of expression my hindquarter.
First it was orgasms, now abortions.
What's next, faked relationships?
Fairly typical of immature "adult" college students isn't it?

I personally think the woman is insane and that Yale should be sanctioned for even condoing anything of this nature. I would certainly hate to be her standing before God Almighty explaining to Him what she did with her body and the body of any unborn child.

and even if it's not fake. it's not your place to judge. your not god. let him deal with it. your opinion doesn't matter, so get over yourself and worry about your own life.

I do not see how using menstrual blood in art can be likened to repeatedly insemenating yourself just to later produce a miscarriage. Menstruation is a natural process in the female body, whereas miscarriages only occur when something is wrong. To induce your own miscarriage is not liberal or liberated and it is certainly not art. Art can be beautiful or hideous, but it does not kill.

It's really sickening. It gives those of us who believe in being able to provide safe, legal abortions a bad name. This woman is abusing her rights that generations have worked so hard to protect. Don't you think this will become fodder for all of the anti-abortion nutsos? Even if it's a joke, it's a sick, sick joke.

I'm an artist- degreed and all. This isn't art- maybe Duchamp would think so, but it isn't. It's sensationalism and a grasp for her ten minutes.

At best it's sophomoric.

Everyone is missing the point of the piece; it's about the body, and personal choice and morals. It doesn't matter that the subject is disturbing, or whether the artist has psychological issues or not. She presenting something to the world that shows that she makes the choices, she's in charge, and is giving us all the same advice. If you don't like it, don't look at it.

I personally think what she did was wrong. I do, however, think the greater picture here is being missed. For the record, I'm a liberal, I do believe in some form of creator, but I also believe in evolution - I don't think either concept is entirely exclusive.

As humans, we have a wide variety of choices available to us. We can choose to be serial killers, to follow the established laws of our society, or any path in between. It is what we choose that defines us as an individual, and for those who believe in some form of divine judgement, determines what 'reward' we will finally receive.

It would seem that our lives are an opportunity for us to define ourselves and our own morality - and to the level that we respect or disrespect others. This woman seems to disrespect both herself and the sensabilities of many others, and that doesn't seem to bother her.

Many of these actions come about as a result of intellectual immaturity, or from a history of abuse or low self-esteem.

No answers here, just insights. Our responses to her behaviour are indications of where we are in the continuum stated above.

--"She presenting something to the world that shows that she makes the choices, she's in charge, and is giving us all the same advice."

So in order to feel in charge of her own life, her own body, she feels the need to REPEATEDLY create a new human life, and repeatedly end that life?! And then to present this evil as "art"?!

Even the idea of doing this is wrong on every level. This isnt about control of her own body, its her need to feel absolute control over another's life.

This sorry excuse for a human is not a liberal. She is simply sick.

Hey, I'm more or less as liberal as the day is long. But this still makes me feel queasy, to say the least. The girl sounds straight up crazy--I'm all for artistic expression and even challenging art, but this is just weird, not to mention ethically questionable...

What I am saying is that the artist has the right to post the expression, even if we don't agree with it. It is her right to chose within her own life whether or not to carry a child to term.
