Head to head

Here are two big, old homes that just hit the market in Northwest Seattle.

Both have four bedrooms, two bathrooms and cool yards, and claim to be in the "Ballard area," meaning they aren't really in Ballard.

Contestant No. 1 is a 2,540-square-foot Loyal Heights Tudor built in 1930. Check out the parlor with a (baby?) grand piano, which I'm assuming doesn't come with the house.

No. 2 is a 1925 Greenwood Craftsman with 2,112 square feet. Take a look at the second bathroom, where the sink is in the shower.

Thoughts?

The first house is clearly in Ballard. You could walk to Ballard High in about one minute and it would not take more than a few minutes to walk to Market Street.

lots on both are too small. I couldn't think of raising kids in either on unless you cleared backyard & put in lawn in #1 and if #2 doesn't have fence, put one in, it's really close to 3rd ave (heavy traffic).

ummm those homes did raise children in those backyards, and today it's even better since there are many glorious parks in Grandma's Ballard. You want grass? Do what millions of homeowners do: work in the yard and make it be what you want.

Heavy traffic on 3rd NW? Busy, but not "heavy". Fence the yard. Or, move to the suburbs. The price of close-in means certain things are not realistic.
