« PS3 tops Xbox 360 for third straight month | Main | Video: Stephen Colbert's Microsoft Zune zinger »
Apart from console sales, one way of assessing the video-game market each month is to see which platforms are responsible for the best-selling games. Here's a look at the top 10 console and handheld video games for July in the United States, as reported by the NPD Group yesterday.
1) Xbox 360 NCAA FOOTBALL 09, 397.6K
2) Wii FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD, 369.6K
3) Nintendo DS GUITAR HERO: ON TOUR, 309.7K
4) Wii PLAY W/ REMOTE, 284K
5) PS3 NCAA FOOTBALL 09, 242.5K
6) Xbox 360 SOUL CALIBUR IV, 218.9K
7) Wii MARIO KART W/ WHEEL, 174.5K
8) Wii ROCK BAND SPECIAL ED BUNDLE, 165.8K
9) PS3 SOUL CALIBUR IV, 155.8K
10) Xbox 360 SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION REVOLUTION, 147.6K
The game "Battlefield: Bad Company" for the Xbox 360 would have been 10th on the list if handheld titles had been excluded. In other words, counting just console games, Microsoft and Nintendo each had four titles in the top 10, compared with two for the PlayStation 3.

Q: Why can't Microsoft buy 'Coolness'? A: Because Coolness has a poison pill in its contract in the event of a Microsoft takeover.
