Microsoft tries to steal iPhone 2.0 thunder

With Apple rumored to be unveiling a new iPhone next week, Microsoft's Windows Mobile unit is trying to get ahead of the news by touting its position in a letter to its industry partners today. But the letter may also get attention for another reason -- a change in the language Microsoft is using to describe its Windows Mobile sales expectations.

Picture
Top to bottom: iPhone, BlackBerry Bold, and HTC Touch Diamond.
As recently as February, Microsoft said it expected to sell "more than 20 million" Windows Mobile licenses in the current fiscal year, which concludes at the end of this month. In today's letter, Microsoft's Andy Lees instead says the company "will sell nearly 20 million Windows Mobile smartphone licenses."

Is the change from "more than" to "nearly" a meaningful hedge? Some might read it that way. But Microsoft representatives say no.

"We've always said our goal has been 20 million, and we're on track," said Scott Rockfeld, group product manager in the company's Mobile Communications Business, when asked about the change. "If it's short of 20 million, it's going to be a rounding error."

Read the full letter here: PDF, 1 page.

The letter includes some thinly veiled digs at Apple, whose next-generation iPhone is expected to based on high-speed 3G wireless technology. Lees, the new senior vice president of Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business, tells the company's mobile-operator partners: "We're proud that we've been able to work with you to deliver more than 40 different phones that run at 3G speeds, at prices that meet a range of customer needs -- something not all smartphones can claim."

Lees also compares Windows Mobile sales to those of Apple and Research in Motion, which has been getting attention for its new BlackBerry Bold device. He writes that Windows Mobile "sold more in the previous four quarters than RIM, and in the last quarter our year-over-year unit growth alone was greater than sales of Apple's iPhone."

In addition, Lees cites the breadth of phones using the company's software:

To our 50 handset makers building phones with our software, thank you. With your help, we give Windows Mobile customers nearly 150 different phone choices -- from phones with full keyboards to brilliant touch screens to convenient flip phones -- with rich email, picture and music experiences. You've delivered Windows Mobile phones with features like GPS, 3+ megapixel cameras, and voice activation -- features that other operating systems have been slow to deliver.

But in terms of a competitive response from Microsoft to Apple's news, the letter looks to be it, for now. Microsoft introduced the latest version of the operating system, Windows Mobile 6.1, in April, and it is not expected to release a new Windows Mobile update next week.

Microsoft is countering Apple and RIM by touting new Windows Mobile devices such as the HTC Touch Diamond and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.

The iPhone is peerless. Anyone spending any time with the new Windows Mobile devices described above will quickly understand the OS's shortcomings: lack of a decent browser experience, and a serious lack of integration offered by each of these phones. Sure, HTC tries to do its best in making the user experience better with its Cube, but the Windows UI paradigm doesn't have enough cues to make working with a small touchscreen well.

Apple has been making plenty of bold predictions about the number of units they plan to ship, its only natural that other companies try to compete in the big-talk game. I think all of them are going to do well, here is why: http://www.zintin.com/blog/2008/06/the-future-of-the-iphone/

Microsoft can't steal, purchase, coerce, or redirect thunder from the iPhone or any Apple product for that matter. Few, if any, can, and definitely not MS. MS a sinking ship right now. Only it vast numbers keep it afloat.

I think what will be the real competition for Windows Mobile is Google's Android offering.

They are likely going to run on very similar types of devices.

Personally, the iPhone and Blackberry are in a slightly different category as the software maker will have full control over the end hardware (closed system) rather than third parties.

Nokia is still going great worldwide regardless of what Apple/RIM etc offer. They've been around for a long time, and people will keep buying their devices because they just bloody well work!

As if Microsoft only had Apple to worry about!

They will rue the day they ever heard of Android.

Yawn.... another late-hour press attempt to fish for web hits by using MS & iPhone in the label. "Microsoft tries to steal iPhone 2.0 thunder"? Right...too bad there's nothing supporting it.

instead, i jumped into the smart phone market recently and i am completely satisfied with my RIM pearl. overall, it's just great to see so many cool phones coming this year. finally!

If Windows Mobile is a superior product, why do I see my boss yanking the battery out of his at almost every meeting because he can't get the thing to reboot?
I don't have to take the battery out of my iPhone to get it to work. Oh, wait maybe that's why it's built in. Apple knew what it was doing.

The browsing experience on both Xperia X1 and the HTC Touch Diamond/Pro should be very nice indeed with Opera 9.5 mobile installed. It zooms and behaves very similarly to the Safari variation installed on the iPhone, and both have higher resolution screens than the iPhone (with the Xperia X1 sporting no less than 800x480).

The major win for Windows Mobile is the vast quantity of good software for it. The OS is still clunky and in some cases unattractive, and nobody can argue much against the fact that the iPhone is remarkably slick - but it's equally hard to argue with the software options available for Windows Mobile. For instance, you can install software on a 3G Windows Mobile device that turns it into an instant Wifi-to-3G router. E-book readers are fantastic. Time management apps like Pocket Informant in collaboration with Exchange Activesync makes the device a better calendar than a desktop Outlook... etc.

My first and only mobile Microsoft OS-based product was Casio's Cassiopeia E-105 back in the 90s. It shipped with Windows CE. A month after I bought the PDA, I received a note from Casio or Microsoft saying that they'd upgraded the OS and I would need to pay $100 for a chip so that I could use the OS. I didn't pay the $100 and I've never bought another Microsoft mobile device ever again -- and never will.

Well, considering the iPhone is already the second bestselling smartphone in the U.S. market, it makes sense for Microsoft to focus on variety. Ultimately, Microsoft and Palm will vie for last place in smartphone software.

MS is a sinking ship? I guess the 20x more Vista users than *all* Mac users proves the numbers DO keep it afloat. And the Apple fanboys once again prove they are myopic in their views and choose to disregard facts.

"The iPhone is peerless. Anyone spending any time with the new Windows Mobile devices described above will quickly understand the OS's shortcomings:"

When the iPhone is able to handle more than one task at a time, I'll consider it a player in the market. "Peerless" is a word only used by fanbois.

It's funny how people accept gross exaggerations and outright lies from Apple in their ads, on their websites, and so on about their so-called "innovations" or how MS sucks in comparison. But when Microsoft touts its real strengths that it usually does such a poor jjob marketing, people (or rather, Apple Fan boys) have a problem with that.

I don't like to take sides, but I have no respect for ANY company whose marketing strategy is based on nothing but lies. Apple does make products that look great, and work great after the first version. Why not focus on that and spare us the lies about innovations or how competitors don't have feature X when they've had it for years. Nothing irks me more than the claim that PCs are just good for "piecharts and spreadsheets", or that auto-complete in a soft-keyboard is an "apple innovation".

Surely "nearly 20 million Windows Mobile SMARTPHONE licenses (alone)" is better than "more than 20 million" Windows Mobile licences in total??
