Gates, Ballmer at D: All Things Digital

Guest post by P-I reporter Joe Tartakoff

At the D: All Things Digital conference last night, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer talked about their college days, Microsoft's beginnings, Windows Vista -- and also offered a "snippet" of Windows 7.

You can watch the Windows 7 demo that they showcased here.

(The BITS blog at the New York Times notes that in the demo Microsoft "made the puzzling choice to unveil a new "multitouch" feature by working with a paint program, evoking memories of the original Macintosh paint program in 1984.")

What Gates and Ballmer didn't offer more details about: the Yahoo deal.

But Ballmer did offer a defense of the reasoning behind the offer.

Here's an exchange:

Ballmer:

To accelerate scale it made sense for us to take a look at the Yahoo acquisition. The truth of the matter is, if nobody else gets scale except the current leader what happens?

... Over time all the ads for the Wall Street Journal Online will be sold by one guy and they'll tell you exactly how much your editorial is worth.

Kara Swisher:

Yeah, like a monopoly. Interesting.

Walt Mossberg:

She makes a great point. That's the sort of argument that was made against you.

Ballmer:

Am I saying there is something wrong? I'm just saying we are guys who will compete. That's all I'm saying.

Gates:

Guys like us avoid monopoly. Avoid them because we compete.

Gates and Ballmer also offered a defense of Windows Vista, with Ballmer saying that, "We gave up, frankly, some compatibility for security."

See a rough transcript of Ballmer and Gates' remarks on the D: All Things Digital site here.

Also, the site has video highlights from the first half of the interview here and highlights from the second half of the interview here.

And, finally, read an Associated Press article on the interview here.

Gates: "Guys like us avoid monopoly."

Surely, he was joking. MS is all about monopoly. It only makes money where it has a monopoly. It wants to drive Google out of the search/online advertising business so it can have another monopoly. When MS has to compete (e.g., Zune), it loses.

Melinda's hair shined like she has a better hairdressing product service or radiance @ having more times with Bill on the videos linked.

The mention of monopoly, of the non game variety, is by Brad Williams on another more recent blog #133011

"When MS has to compete (e.g., Zune), it loses."

Loses what? Copyrights to songs unlike ipod users? What's with the double standards of the music industry against Microsoft with the zune that are not imposed on the ipod or other recording or amplification of music mediums?

In his quest to eliminate white male American workers from Microsoft under the disguise of "Diversity" Bill Gates has now built a region of the country overrun with Indians who boldly demand accelerated promotions and raises by calling out "Diversity" at all times and blatantly and openly discriminate against white America workers.

With unemployment so high in this country why is Microsoft allowed to continue to ship in more and more Indians, Chinese, and Russian workers? Isn't it time we send back all of the H1-B visa and green card workers? We as Americans can't go abroad to other countries to work as they protect their citizens by not allowing foreigners to take jobs their citizens need. Just try to go to India and get a job or buy a house or a business. Even try going to Europe and get a job - you, as a foreigner cannot. If you don't believe me then check it out for yourself.

We ALL need to boycot Microsoft products and stop letting the U.S. government provide protections and government contracts for Microsoft. If Gates wants Microsoft to be an Indian comoany then he should move it and himself to India and send all of these Indians back home where they belong.
