Consoles: Xbox 360 tops PS3, but just barely

It doesn't get much closer than this: Microsoft's Xbox 360 beat out the PlayStation 3 in U.S. console sales for April, but only by a whisker -- 188,000 units to 187,100 units, according to NPD Group data released this afternoon. As reported here earlier today, Nintendo's Wii dominated the market again, with 714,200 units sold.

The month included the April 29 launch of "Grand Theft Auto IV," and the Xbox 360 version of the game was the top-selling title for the month, with 1.85 million units of the game sold for the Microsoft console. The PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV sold an even 1 million units.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier had this to say in an e-mail accompanying the data: "It was surprising not to see bigger hardware sales for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 given the release of GTA IV. However, since the game was only in the market for 5 days during this reporting period, that sales lift could very well be evident in May data."

Will there ever be a reason to buy a PS3? With the poor quality of GTA IV on PS3 (graphics, glitches, freezing and lackluster PSN) what would cause someone to go out and buy new hardware? Gears of War II is set to own x-mas and steal the thunder from MGS...after this long PS3 should be making up ground not still bleeding!

thats just in USA and is basically even. so put in account japan and europe which is selling way more ps3s then xbox360s. means as long as we can stay close in xbox360 hometown USA then we are doing better globaly.so in fact ps3s are doing better on the world wide scale,

so Mr. unregistered where it is all even? Where is your data? Instead of providing supposition next time put in facts! GTA IV on the PS3 bites and the only reason the PS3 sells better in Europe and Japan is because of an innate bias in those countries against American Products. The 360 kicks the PS3 butt.

meaning even in 2008 not before because before 2008 xbox360 own ps3 but as long as we can stay even in USA for now on we are looking good because of the support of japan and europe.remember at its highest point 360 had a ten million console lead over ps3 now its 6 million.and its surprising it shrunk because ps3 blockbusters hasnt even come yet which is starting this june with metal gear solid 4.then the momentum starts rolling with killzone final fantasy and god of war which is confirm for march.

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39537&end=39572 is probably a more accurate chart, even though it is worldwide. Notice that PS3 is leading XB360 the whole period from the last week of March through the first week of May.
