'GTA' what? Nintendo still rules console market

As the video-game industry prepares to see the impact of "Grand Theft Auto IV" on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, Nintendo's "GTA"-less Wii console keeps chugging along. The company just announced that NPD Group data, to be released this afternoon, will put sales of the Wii at 714,000 in April, more than either competing console.

The Wii has sold 9.5 million cumulative units in the United States, Nintendo says. Microsoft said yesterday that the Xbox 360's installed base has now topped 10 million units. The Microsoft console had a year-long head start over the Wii and the PS3.

I'll post more on the NPD stats when they're out later today.

Microsoft statement of "Current Generation Gaming Consoles" does not include the Nintendo DS or the Sony PlayStation Portable. If you include them in the numbers of the target platforms the numbers greatly change.

"The U.S. install base contributes to global sales of over 19 million, more than any other current-generation console."

So if you go off this line they do not consider the Wii, PSP or DS a current-generation console.

Not including the DS or PSP or saying that the Wii is not a "Next Gen" system can muddy the waters.

"PSP or DS a current-generation console"

Those aren't consoles.

Should we also include cellular phones when we talk about desktop pc sales? NO, and for the same reasons as above.
