Yahoo tops estimates, but will it be enough?

Yahoo today posted first-quarter profit of 11 cents per share (PDF), not counting one-time items such as big gain from Yahoo's equity stake in Alibaba Group in China. That beat, by 2 cents, the average estimate among analysts polled in advance by Thomson Financial.

However, the company didn't adjust its top-line revenue projection for the year, keeping it static at $7.2 billion to $8 billion. That could factor into investors' consideration of Microsoft's bid for the company. Yahoo shares are down in initial after-hours trading.

Update, 3:30 p.m.: Also see coverage by Bloomberg News, The Associated Press, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
