Chart: Microsoft search share still slipping

Microsoft's proposed Yahoo acquisition would immediately give it a much bigger slice of the Internet search market, if it happens. In the meantime, it appears that Microsoft is struggling to keep up on its own.

As reported this morning, Google boosted its share of the U.S. search market in February, according to data from comScore, which officially released the numbers this afternoon. But as shown in the chart below, the latest numbers are just part of a longer-term trend. Microsoft's search share has been stagnant or slipping since its Live Search Club promotion boosted its numbers temporarily over the summer. Yahoo has been following a similar trend, while Google's numbers have edged up steadily.

What a surprise considering that a recent poll found 73% of Microsoft FTEs use Google as their default search engine instead of MSN, oops, I mean Live Search which is absolutely asinine name for a search engine. Microsoft failed to realize that their search pages are visually overwhelming to use and even if they improve the algorithims for their searches, they have failed to properly brand their services even to the point of creating a business application with the same name.

i remember billy proclaiming a few years ago (before microsoft search was renamed to live!) that msn search would be so popular people would say "msn it" like they say "google it"

then again, this is coming from a man who's original 1996 release of a book titled, "the road ahead" did not include the internet.

microsoft might become more powerful now that he's stepped aside.
