Tracking Microsoft's Windows Live outage (Updated)

Readers have been e-mailing this morning about problems accessing Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail and Messenger services. Microsoft is acknowledging the problem, but as of late morning Pacific time, there doesn't appear to be a resolution. Here's the company's initial statement:

We are aware that some customers may be experiencing difficulty accessing their Windows Live accounts. We're actively investigating the cause and are working to take the appropriate steps to remedy the situation as rapidly as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and disruption this may be causing our customers.

It's not clear if this is related, but Microsoft executive Bob Muglia noted in an earlier interview with CNet News.com that the company has switched "a good part of the Windows Live servers" to the new Windows Server 2008, which officially launches Wednesday. (Via Mary Jo Foley.)

One report suggests it's an East Coast problem, but I'm not able to access my Windows Live Messenger account from here in Seattle, either. The last time this happened, less than a year ago, readers of this blog created a virtual water cooler in the comments, reporting their locations and the problems they were encountering. Feel free to do that again in the comments on this post.

Update, 12:15 p.m.: Coincidence? Big Florida power outage.

Update, 12:25 p.m. The Associated Press notes that some Xbox Live users may also be affected. For what it's worth, I was just able to sign into my Xbox Live account on my console. Any other experiences to report on that front?

Update, 12:40 p.m.: Was just able to sign into my own Messenger account again here in Seattle. Feel free to continue posting status reports below.

Update, 3 p.m.: A new statement from Microsoft:

Earlier today, an issue began that has caused some consumers worldwide to experience difficulty logging in to their Windows Live ID accounts. The issue is purely impacting the log-in process for customers and largely does not impact customers who were already logged in. We have made significant progress in decreasing the number of customers currently affected since initial reports, but the issue has not yet been completely resolved. Microsoft is working quickly and aggressively to resolve the issue and expects to restore normal operation to all customers shortly. Our customers have come to expect a high level of service reliability in their experience with Windows Live and we apologize for any inconvenience this particular issue has caused consumers.

Update, 5 p.m.: Microsoft says access has been restored.

I also had problems on Tuesday (San Jose, CA), however this is definitely not the first time something like this has happened for me. I seem to get the "Server too busy" or "Service Unavailable" message at least 2 times per month. Very annoying, not to mention all the usability issues with the new hotmail interface... how about the one where you simply want to Reply to a message and they put the cursor into the "To:" field instead of the Body section? That's a no-brainer to me. Hotmail & Microsoft, you've got a lot of work to do to make your users happy!

#102543

Down in NJ since late yesterday, 2/26. I'm super annoyed about the way Microsoft is handling this situation. Yes, Hotmail is a "Free Web Based" e-mail service, but I happen to be a paid member (MSN Premium). This is most definitely a hindrance to my professional and personal life. I wonder if we'll be able to retrieve the mail that we received during the outtage once the server comes back up????

Hotmail Access Workaround - Log into mymsn with Hotmail info - It's worked for me the past two days!

#102581

Posted by unregistered user at 2/27/08 5:55 p.m.

A workaround isn't helpful, as it only gives you access to you OLD messages. Your new messages, however, are held up until this issue is resolved. As far as I'm concerned, that's not much of a workaround.

Oh great and mighty gmail & yahoo users - give it a rest! Telling us to switch now doesn't help us in getting that job offer or love letter we've been waiting for. God forbid that you should have an outage. When you do we won't pour salt on it...Or?
