Macworld: Apple unveils 'Time Capsule' device

Posting from San Francisco ... Apple isn't using the phrase "home server," but the first announcement from Steve Jobs here at Macworld Expo this morning is a new device called "Time Capsule," which he said will work with the Time Machine feature in the new Mac OS X Leopard to help people back up their personal media and data over their home networks.

It's an Airport Extreme wireless base station with a large hard drive. The 500 GB version will sell for $299, the 1 terabyte version for $499, and they'll be available in February.

"These are very aggresive prices because we want people backing up their content," Jobs said.

It's not a precise counterpart, but Microsoft got into a similar market last year, unveiling a program called Windows Home Server along with its hardware partners, in part to facilitate home media backups. The experience hasn't been without glitches for the Redmond company. The Microsoft software suffered a high-profile bug that caused concerns about data corruption.

I bought an Airport Extreme base station just for this purpose, based on promises at one of Apple's shows last year. Hopefully Apple will fix that device before they come out with this new one.

they are coming out with this new one in two weeks. I doubt your airport will be fixed by then...

I can't seem to find anything on the web, but is this a NAS/wireless base station? Or is it just restricted to Time Machine backups?

But really, I don't see why anybody would want to use this for their backup solution. It's a single hard drive, pointing to a single point of failure. No RAID? So you have all your computers backing up to this device . . . what happens if the hard drive in this airport fails? It might be tough to get the data off of it.

Server grade hard drives fail just as easy. I would feel safer if their was mirror or RAID 5.

Not going to buy this one.

PictureMicrosoft, you really need to start looking for revenue elsewhere. Resorting to bribing users to use your products and services is just plain embarrassing.
