Posting from Las Vegas ... General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner is on stage now at the Consumer Electronics Show, outlining planned enhancements in the auto maker's OnStar in-vehicle technology program.
Microsoft provides the in-car communication and entertainment technology for Ford and Fiat. Earlier today, I asked Martin Thall, general manager of Microsoft's Automotive Business Unit, about the possibility of Microsoft partnering in some form with GM, and he didn't rule it out as a possibility.
From our perspective, there's a component within their strategy that they could be taking better advantage of -- the infotainment or entertainment side. I think GM recognizes that. ... They have done a phenomenal job focusing on safety and security and related applications. ... But there certainly exists the possibility for us to work together on the platform for OnStar, in the entertainment space, and certainly in the connected services space, as we move into that. That opportunity exists with General Motors as it does with Chrysler in North America and other car companies around the world.
Earlier this week, Microsoft said free 911 calls would be added to Ford's Sync system, a move seen as stepping up Sync's competition with OnStar.

Microsoft, you really need to start looking for revenue elsewhere. Resorting to bribing users to use your products and services is just plain embarrassing.
