CES: Gates brings out a 'Guitar Hero' ringer: Slash

Posting from Las Vegas ... It's a Consumer Electronics Show tradition to trot out celebrities in an attempt to dazzle the crowd, and Microsoft didn't disappoint in that regard during Bill Gates' keynote here tonight.

The night ended with Microsoft executive Robbie Bach challenging Gates to a "Guitar Hero" duel. After Bach brought out a "Guitar Hero" champion to stand in for him on the old Guns N' Roses tune "Welcome to the Jungle," Gates said he had a ringer, too: Slash, the former Guns N' Roses guitarist.

Earlier in the night, Microsoft showed a video spoofing Gates' retirement plans, featuring a long list of celebrities and political figures, including Jon Stewart, Bono, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, George Clooney, Steven Spielberg and others.

Update, Monday morning: Here's the spoof video of Gates' last day.

Update, Tuesday morning: That video appears to be gone. Try this one on YouTube.

You can never beat the original. You can be the world champion alright, but there's something amazing of actually PLAYING an instrument.

I swear if people put the amount of time they do in Guitar Hero or Rock Band, they could probably be alright at the actual guitar :)

I would like to thank Slash on here for allowing me the opportunity to get to know him through his new book "SLASH". "APPETITE" sounds different knowing what the band was actually doing back then...AWESOME!!!!!!

Thanks,
Ches

There's a nice stark contrast; industry moguls meet the nitty-gritty of rock-and-roll, visually represented in the axes chosen to be wielded.

I bet you they were so embarrassed.

Yo guys we need to do something about this GNR situation...the world just doesn't go around without them. We've spent enough time listening to the Britney Spears crap and it's time for classic rock n' roll to be big again...GRN style...WHOSE WITH ME?!?!?!?
