On tap this week: Microsoft shareholders meeting

Microsoft's annual shareholders meeting is scheduled for Tuesday morning in downtown Seattle. It will be interesting to get a sense for the mood of investors given the events of the past few weeks. Microsoft's share price slipped below $34 a share last week, after peaking above $37 following the company's surprising first-quarter earnings.

Two shareholder proposals are on the agenda:

  • The first, submitted on behalf of the board of the New York City Pension Funds, would ask the company's management to institute new policies for dealing with Internet censorship in foreign countries.

  • The second, from investor John C. Harrington, "would establish a Board Committee on Human Rights which would review and make policy recommendations regarding human rights issues raised by the company's activities and policies."

Microsoft's board recommended that shareholders vote against both. Read details of the proposals, and the board's explanation of its positions, starting on page 29 of Microsoft's proxy statement.

I'll be attending the meeting and posting about it here.
