Video: Zune's new 'click-flick' hybrid interface

Microsoft's new Zune devices, announced Tuesday night and set to be available next month, will come with a new button that can be used either by clicking or by moving a finger across the touch-sensitive surface.

Drew Peterson of Microsoft's Zune team demonstrated the interface for me at a media briefing Tuesday afternoon. Here's the video.

Wow it took Microsoft a long time to finally add podcast support to the Zune. But pleased to finally see it.

Microsoft did a great job with the Zune - this comment coming from an avid iPod user, who has purchased each generation iPod to date. I've always loved the interface of the Zune, I'm sure it was the reason why Apple recently updated their interface design.

Big points for allowing first generation Zunes to get the upgraded interface and software advancements! That's huge, because Apple has yet to do that for older iPod firmware, which is annoying as I enjoy the new software features in the most recent iPods.

The wireless sync in the Zune would be huge. I've been waiting for that feature for a while so it's nice to see someone putting it in.

My biggest beef with the Zune is the buttons. I'm sorry but Microsoft just doesn't have the hardware design skills as Apple. They'll always will fall short in that area, but they are scoring big points with their software.

Did you happen to notice if there was any bookmarking, ie if the podcast resumes where it left off last time, one thing i do not like about the current firmware is that it cant remember where i left off!

The current zune already handles bookmarking. You just press the resume instead of the play from beginning option.

It's done this for all of my music and videos. I just double and triple checked to make sure.

Are you sure you've played with your zune enough?

Resume works on video, I've never seen it on music.

How are you resuming on long audio tracks (or do you just mean unpausing?)

Yet another awesome product from Microsoft (and a great update to the already sweet Zune). I'm glad Microsoft is also giving all the features to Zune 1 owners. :)

55578.

I just checked and you're right and I was wrong.

I was just resuming from pause on Audio.

As soon as I switched to a different track it removed the bookmark from the audio.

Hmm...that does suck a bit, but not that badly since usually if I switch songs I'm not intending to go back to the other song and pick up where I left off.

I think I can see the design logic even though an option for those who care would be nice.

Microsoft, open up Zune to Devs/Hackers, light weight SDK/documentation effort is all I'm suggesting here. That and a strong disclaimer stating hacks/mods are unsupported, hacks at their own risk, etc...

Opening up and providing information that Apple wouldn't have the balls/ovaries to do will win hearts/minds and fuel innovation.

Hi - can anyone tell me whether I will be able to connect this up to the Zune website, register and make it work from the UK?

Regards
