After Halo 3: What's next for Bungie

Picture

Halo's Master Chief in the trilogy's third installment.

With Halo 3 set for release Tuesday, one big question is the future direction of Microsoft's Bungie Studios, developer of the blockbuster trilogy. The company isn't giving any specific answers at this point, but there's a clue in the fact that Bungie has nearly doubled in size since Halo 2's 2004 release, to nearly 115 full-time employees, not counting temporary workers.

Brian Jarrard, Bungie community lead, explained in an interview that one reason for the growth was the sheer size of the Halo 3 development process. But he said the expansion also was made with an eye toward what's next.

"We're just trying to prepare ourselves for the future and get positioned. As a studio we want to grow to a point where we're able to do more than just one game every three years. We're trying to experiment with smaller cell teams that are prototyping on potential new (intellectual property) and future projects. We know that we need to have some guys stay behind and be able to support Halo 3 after release, possibly doing some downloadable content in addition to being able to work with Peter Jackson on a new Halo game. We have a lot of irons in the fire right now, and in order to be able to multitask, we've just had to grow."

The Halo games have played a huge role in Xbox and Xbox 360 sales. By extension, they're critical to Microsoft's home entertainment strategy. See this story from Monday's newspaper for more on Halo 3, and how it fits into the company's broader plans.

Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, said he doesn't expect Bungie to leave Halo completely behind. One example is the studio's ongoing work on the secretive Halo game with Jackson.

However, Kim said to expect some non-Halo projects from Bungie, as well.

"They've always said to me, 'Look we love Halo, obviously, but we have other stories we want to tell,' " he said. He compared it to George Lucas taking a break after the final installment in the first Star Wars trilogy. Since he raised the Star Wars example, I quizzed Kim about the possibility of a Halo prequel, but he wouldn't reveal anything.

hay mna after i played the game over afew times and adjusted to the new stuff i found its peety gud and unfortunatly like halo 2 it seems halo 3 is giving thta message thta there will be another game and yea it was to freakin short dudes it tokk u 2 or three years and thats it holy crap wat were you doin ino its hard to make the game and all but it should have been longer and not a ripe off ending like halo combat evolved

im glad chief doesnt die and for people who thinks he dies watch the vid at the end of the credits and you will change your mind

also if you beat the game on legendary the cutscene after the credits changes and at the end it shows some forunner ship going through space then theres a flash of light and you can tell its a forrunner planet

so there are 3 possibilities

1. bungie is working on another halo trilogy
2. the halo movies made by peter jackson will continue the story
3. the secret project that peter jackson and bungie is working on a game trilogy from what i read it was a side thing hes doing with the halo movie

YOu guys do know that there will be another Halo, right? MC doesnt die, and if u play on legendary (DO NOT READ SPOILERS) it shows like 10 seconds of him going onto an alien planet.

I'm gonna be nice and put my **SPOILER WARNING** at the top.

First off, I'd just like to say that you're a moron. Just cause the Master Chief doesn't die, does NOT mean there will be another HALO. There IS a distinct possibility of a 4th game with the Master Chief in it...but it won't be called HALO 4. He never actually went onto that thing. I wouldn't really call it a planet...it looked much more like the Death Star out of Star Wars than a planet.

#55491

Posted by unregistered user at 10/2/07 3:06 p.m.

*SPOILER WARNING*
That planet at the end of the legendary video is Marathon, a human ship made out of one of mars' moons, Deimos. Like twelve years ago Bungie made a game called Marathon with a spartan in it. It was also a trilogy and is no doubt the planet you see at the end. I hope they remake the Marathon Trilogy though cuz it's kinda dumb. You can download it for free at AlephOne.com.

#55577

Posted by unregistered user at 10/2/07 11:40 p.m.

yeah, halo is actually the prequal to marathon. So i think they might remake marathon now... or not... who knows!

#55872

Posted by unregistered user at 10/4/07 9:57 a.m.

could that planet/ship at the end be the dyson sphere where the forerunners went to avoid death after they activated the halo network? It could have came out of slipspace when arbiter and MC destroyed the ark and tried to return to earth resulting in MC getting left behind.

Halo 3 was way 2 short and dat clip after the credits sets it up for another trilogy.HALO MUST GO ON!!!!

#56290

Posted by unregistered user at 10/6/07 3:56 p.m.

i agree that it was to short. i went to school got the game at 4pm and finished it before midnight. although, the menu screens and the options we now have for halo are completely amazing... i think more time should of been spent on the story.

cannot wait to see whats next.

of coures it is a Forerunner ship not marathon or what ever if you idiots looked closer it had all the symbols on the outside that the rings had just look its proboly a Death Star type thing all i no is it blows stuff up

IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE BUNGIE WILL END THE STORY WITH MORE MYSTERIES.

THE HALO TRILOGY ROCKS BUT THERE ARE FAULTS THAT NEED TO BE FIXED
MANY PEOPLE WERE SAYING THAT HALO 3 REVEALS ALL THE MYSTERIES BUT WE STILL DO NOT KNOW MCH ABOUT THE FORERUNNERS.
THE TERMINALS IN HALO 3 HELP US UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BUT THERE ARE STILL TOO MANY MYSTERIES ABOUT HALO'S CREATION. THE FLOOD SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MORE IN HALO 4 AS WELL BECAUSE ALL WE REALLY DO IS FIGHT THEM - NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY BEGAN, THEIR PURPOSE AND SO ON...

IF THEY DO CREATE A HALO 4 I WOULD LIKE TO SEE:
- MORE STORYLINE (HALO 3 WAS A BIT OF A RUSH...)
- MORE MYSTERIES
- ANSWERS (THERE ARE STILL MANY MYSTERIES ABOUT THE FORERUNNERS)
- A GREAT ENDING (I WOULD PREFER AN ENDING THAT CREATES 'A NEW BEGGINNING'.
- MORE ENEMIES (THE WAR AGAINST THE COVENANT IS FINISHED AND THE ARK AND INSTALLATION 04 - AND 05 ARE DESTROYED)

IT IS VERY HARD TO SAY IF THERE WILL BE A HALO 4 BUT MANY PEOPLE NEED MORE...

ok- people- more details *specific spoiler alert*

If you watch the movie after the creds on legendary you see half of a ship floating through space towards a planet. That half a ship is the other half of the amber clad that Master chief and the Arbiter took off in in the final level. The portal that was to take the entire ship home became unstable when the ring was activated and cut the ship in half. The planet MC and Cortana are floating towards is called Onix. On Onix there are 2 other Spartans and the Doctor that created Cortana in her own image. They are trapped because of a flood infestation that took out thier last remaining ship. They have long been trying to contact earth but because of a new law created towards the beginning of halo 2, earth is to be under strict secrecy and radio silence. PS: One of the spartans is Commander Keys brother, the other is the daughter of Commander Hood. those two and MC were childhood friends (MC was Seargent jhonsons brothers son). If there is not another Halo, then the movie will explain the rest- prettyt much Earth is peacful, Humans flurish thanks to Covenant techology insites, and MC and the other spartans clear Onix of all hostiles and re colonize it as a second earth, after finally making radio contact with earth. onix is a Forunner planet- they made it just like the HAlos. PS #2: The forunners are humans, specifically Blacks, with a White Hierarchy. When the flood infestation began the Sent a male and female white and a male and female black to onix until all the flood were dead. Unfortunatly, some flood hid on onix as well and both parties start the new race of themselves.

Your welcome.

ok for all the fasgs that didnt beat the game on legendary after all the stuff u guys see is done it goes to a screen in whch master cheifs sip is hurteling down towards a planet...that planet is onyx...the planet in which all the other spartians are and also master cheifs dad is so if you guys want to know if there is gana be a new game...well duh its called halo wars because if u watch the trailer it shows alot of spartens going to attack all the covinent because after the truths death the arbiter turned because hee thaught the master cheif couldent save the galixy or planet earth... so ya retards

#63827

Posted by unregistered user at 11/6/07 8:41 p.m.

for ya info halo wars takes place before the first halo game (THE FALL OF REACH) thats why keyes fled with piller and the last spartan known as master chief because the planet reach was destroyed, thats why the arbiter was tortured in halo 2, because he led the fleet that attacted reach, and let keyes and the piller escape

#63832

Posted by unregistered user at 11/6/07 8:50 p.m.

and that mysterie planet is called onix it is a human planet and on that planet are spartan 3's (p.s. i got this information from the halo book "the ghost of onix")

#64601

Posted by unregistered user at 11/8/07 5:04 p.m.

u retards masterchiefs dad isnt on that planet. his dad is never revealed, dr halsey (creater of the spartans) practically stole john wen he was a child so his parents are forgotten to him. i hav no idea wat the planet is but if its onyx then there are more spartans to come, as several spartan IIs and IIIs are on onyx. although they are in an alternate dimension type thing so would be very hard to reach.

#64604

Posted by unregistered user at 11/8/07 5:09 p.m.

also the arbiter wasnt punished for letting keyes escape, he was punished for letting the chief destroy the first ring!! i really wish people would wisen up on there info before posting BULLCRAP!

Guys, didn't you read what Shane Kim said? He compared Halo to Star Wars. Didn't George Lucas make 4, 5, and 6 before he made 1, 2, and 3? And for those people who think that it's Onyx, if you read the book, it clearly talks about the planet being blown up, and that it is made up entirely of Sentinels. The Spartans and the Doctor go into the Dyson sphere, and that's where they are right now. Onyx is gone. I don't know what exactly is going to happen next, but I'd have to say that the Marathon theory is right. It makes sense anyways, though there would be some questions that would need to be answered.

I think its fairly obvious the planet at the end of Halo 3 isn't Onyx, I would go on about that but the point about it blowing up has already been made. The truth is simple, Bungie is no longer controlled exclusively by Microsoft or the X-Box brand, that means simply they plan to go multi-platform (PS3 probably along with the 360) in order to broaden their profits. Now Microsoft owns the Halo license so Bungie cannot make a Halo 4 for all systems...but they do own the rights to a certain trilogy called Marathon. The next game will be an updated Marathon (so it fits in with Halo's storyline) and you will play it on PS3 and the X-Box 360. The storyline will no doubt be a battle between a new alien race, the remaining Covenant, and the Forerunners as well as the UNSC as they each try to take control of the reamining rings and contain the Flood. Remember a gravemind is formed when enough flood mass is concentrated to create a conscienceness. No one ever said there could be only one gravemind, and since the Ark wasn't even fully destroyed its safe to say the Flood is still out there thinking and spreading. Master Chief has a long time to go before retirement. -James

All the halos either don't work or are destroyed, so they're not going to call it halo. Also I heard that microsoft is working on an MMOFPS (Massively Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter), I wonder what that uncomfirmed project Bungie's working on.

All of you people are extremely stupid. The planet at the end of the credits is not Onyx. Halo is not a prequel to marathon. Bungie has stated that repeatedly just for morons like you who think the games are related at all. They're not. And who ever the idiot was that said that stuff about MC being Sargent Johnson's son, you are a complete idiot. None of what you said in that comment made any sense. It was ALL wrong. There is no flood on Onyx, the UNSC has had control of that planet sense before they ever made contact with the covenant. Read the books before you go on to a website and babble incoherently about a subject that you obviously have no idea about. I seriously doubt that you have ever even played Halo. You sicken me and please, nobody believe what this idiot said.

#100467

Okay, guys the planet MC goes to on the end of halo 3 IS Onyx. The 4th book Ghosts of Onyx by Eric Nylund, explains that Section Three, an ultrasecret cell of the office of naval intelligance starts up a new Spartan III project. The planet Onyx AKA the shield world, as called by the forerunners, Is abandonded. Dr. Halsey goes to Onyx with the spartan II Linda. She finds the spartan III's under fire by drones. They all eventually get trapped inside a dyson sphere. There will probably not be a halo 4 and halo wars is set before halo fall of reach. the movie peter jackson is making may explain after halo 3.

P.S. there is going to be 6 books in the series they are only making one more after Fall of reach, the flood, ghosts of onyx, contact harvest, and first strike. they are also making a comic series by Marvel, and a mixed comic books by bungie.

whoever posted this is a retard...If you watch the halo wars trailers it BEFORE halo takes place...first contact with the covanent and all that. watch the gameplay trailer, the scarabs are something comepletely new to the humans at that point. get the facts strait. However i will say that it may be onyx because-if you read the books- it says that a part of onyx is in another dimension, i wont go into details about that, but cheif did make it through the portal and it closed before he could get out. this may mean that he is in another dimension. **SPOILER***** yes there are supposed to be other spartans there, but-if you are going off the books- he was taken from his family at the age of six(however this is also in the last level of the game told by the annoying grunt) and if i remember correctly i think that his home planet was destroyed. I appologize for my lack of punctuation and grammar, but im just trying to get a point accross.

(((((((((((((for everyone))))))))))))))))))
Halo Wars: Happens before The Fall of Reach(Read the book)
Ghosts of Onyx: Yes, this is the new site for the Spartan III project. It is led by DR. Halsey, and there are a few Spartans still alive. Halsey takes 2 people, (i forgot, i havent read the book for awhile) that are well known in the Halo Universe, and gives them what looks like E.V.A armor from Halo 3, that isnt as strong as Mark VI Mjolnir armor, but it suffices. There is a HUGE Sentinel building facility on Onyx, that produces a Sentinel roughly every 5 seconds. So there are BILLIONS. Dr. Halsey takes her group, and they try to get into the Dyson Sphere before it closes up forever. **** Spoiler***

They get inside, and it is like a whole new world, apparently a Forerunner built planet. And the book ends there. I think it is more like a big Religious allusion. Them making it to the Shield World (Dyson sphere) is like wiping out Humanity due to Original Sin, or something like that. It just seems like a Biblical type Reference to me. but whatever

first of all IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED HALO 3 DONT RUIN IT. ok the MC does not die but we know the halo gets destroyed in halo 3 but at the end gets me suspicious that planet has alot of lights on it if you look closely maybe it could be a new super weapon like the death star but the question is who would control it we know the covenant has been wasted welll i shud say there leader is dead i dont think they were all destroyed. but halo 4 or watever it will be called woulld be the MC landing on that planet probably and soforth.

Well I have read everyones posts and think the idea of the planet being onyx is neat. I personally think its just another forerunner planet. I mean you can see the one they built at the end of the game in the sky. Who is to say they didn't build more than one? lol Anyway its all speculation at this point. Cant wait for the movie and the next book!

Spell Onyx right ffs.
Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Onyx destroyed?

The Dyson sphere was in the core of the planet Onyx. The sphere was built INSIDE of a slip space bubble so the shield world would have been out of our dimension which basically made it safe from the Halo effect. What ever that was at the end of H3 was not Onyx nor the shield world.

PictureI think taking a larger share of Facebook would be a good move. Facebook is preparing itself to be the platform of the web and this is exactly what MS needs. Also incorporating facebook services with outlook and hotmail could be extremely useful. Unfortunately, a complete buyout would put MS's name behind the service which could turn users away (as fickle as young people are) so, like the previous 250 million investment, it would need to be quiet."
