Microsoft's Messenger, Hotmail experience outage

Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail and Messenger services appear to be having problems this morning. I'm getting calls from readers saying that they're unable to sign in, and I'm unable to sign in myself. Feel free to post your own experiences below. I've asked for official word from Microsoft, and I'll post it here when it comes in.

Update, 11:45 a.m.: Microsoft says it started seeing some problems around 8:45 a.m. Pacific time. Here's the statement from Adam Sohn, a director in Microsoft's Online Services Group.

"We are aware that a small percentage of Windows Live users are experiencing problems signing in to some services. We're actively investigating the cause and are working to take the appropriate steps to remedy the situation as rapidly as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and disruption this may be causing our customers."

Update, 12:05 p.m.: To address one of the questions raised in the comments, below, Microsoft says no customer data has been compromised. I'll continue to post updates as they come in.

Update, 1:20 p.m. Question for those still unable to sign in to Messenger and Hotmail: What happens if you restart your PC and try signing in again?

On the advice of a reader, Marc Hills, I tried restarting my Windows XP machine a few minutes ago, and I was able to sign in to Messenger for the first time today. It could be a coincidence -- perhaps service was simply restored to my account at that moment in time, independent of my machine restarting.

As it happens, I had an Automatic Update (the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2007) waiting, and it installed during the shut-down process. It's not clear if the Automatic Update had anything to do with the problem or solution. It, too, could be a coincidence. But Marc also had an Automatic Update waiting to install, and he was also able to sign in after restarting.

Update, 1:37 p.m.: Some people in the comments are saying that they're now able to sign in, apparently independent of the restart theory above. Feel free to continue to share your status.

Update, 5:30 p.m.: The problem appeared to be resolved as of early this afternoon. On the phone, Microsoft's Sohn declined to say what caused the problem, but he said it was not the result of any malicious activity. He reiterated the earlier statement that only a "small percentage" of users experienced problems. He declined to say how many people were affected.

"We hate it when anybody has trouble accessing the services, obviously," Sohn said. However, he added, "There have been much bigger incidents in the history of large-scale Internet services, both for us and for other people. ... This was just a hiccup. It's an unfortunate one, but that's part of what you have to deal with in running services at this scale."

Definitely having troubles here as well. When trying to go to the Hotmail home page, the browser hangs for a while and then I finally get a "Cannot find server" message.

Thanks for pointing out that it's a MS problem.

you would think the PR heads responsible for hotmail/messenger would post something in clear view on msn.com letting users know what was going on. instead, i'm relegated to seeking out the issue myself, wondering whether or not it's ME that has the problem. idiots.

This is why a monopoly will never work. Even with competition they are lax about availability. Remember this is hardly the first time. And do they realize that they are affecting people's ability to communicate. What if Verizon we out for a day? And no I should not suck it up because hotmail is not free. The deal is that I look at the ads, and hotmail provide me with email. No email - no ads. Thanks ### I switched to Yahoo a long time ago; in all the year I have used them they have never failed me once. This is web based email - not rocket science.

Los Angeles, CA - Can't login. All kinds of messages - server busy, server unavailable etc. Not surprised with their director saying it's affecting only few people, and the whole world keeps on complaining!

I've been unable to sign in since around 12noon NYC. MSN Messenger shows i have emails coming in, I just cant check them...not from work or remotely from home.

#29362

Posted by unregistered user at 4/12/07 12:02 p.m.

Small percentage? Like 100?

#29363

Posted by unregistered user at 4/12/07 12:02 p.m.

I agree that they should post something on MSN.com's main page about this, since that's up and running and that's where people are going to look. I mean, maybe it's just the online games that I play that make me used to it, but when a server is down, that should be a company's priority.

Oh, and I love how this "small percentage" covers at least from Brazil to British Columbia to the UK. Me, I'm in the middle of that triangle (Mass.)

#29364

Posted by unregistered user at 4/12/07 12:02 p.m.

Microsoft should not have lied about the number of users affected. Now I'm not sure I believe their assertion that stored data is not affected.

#29367

No hotmail in Ottawa, Canada either.

Seems like a latge proportion of hotmail users to me ...

Sigh.

#29368

Posted by unregistered user at 4/12/07 12:03 p.m.

"Small percentage"... you know, if we all of us, who can't sign in, were to send a complaint to MSN, then they would probably get flooded. Why don't you just admit that the whole system is down, and NO ONE can get any service? Oh, and how come there is not an alternative way to check our accounts??? Keep this up Hotmail, and soon you will have one less customer in the "small percentage" of your customers who are experiencing these problems.

#29369

Posted by unregistered user at 4/12/07 12:03 p.m.

I haven't been able to access the site today. I'm in Maryland and first tried around 12:15pm EST.

a small percentage = B.S.
no thanks to MS for being upfront about the problem.

Bermuda here, not able to connect to MSN Msgr or log on to hotmail.com. Seems like a small percentage in MS terms actually means the whole world. However I pay Hotmail for my service so naturally I get annoyed at outages especially when MS trivialise the scope of it.

Hotmail and Messenger down here in the UK, and has been for the last 7 hours.
When I first tried troubleshooting the problem, the online help insisted there was a problem with my proxy server or firewall.
I checked my settings numerous times and saw nothing. But the service status unisted everything was stable and running at Microsoft.
After about 4 hours the Service Status finally admitted there was a problem.
Trust it to happen on a day I'm waiting for some extremely important email, I hope no mail has been lost as a result of this glitch

Yup mine is not working !!!! I can't believe the arrogance to say a SMALL PERCENTAGE !!! Bull roar.

It was hard enough to find out that there was an outage at all - they certainly don't make it easy for their customers to find out what is going on.
