Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail and Messenger services appear to be having problems this morning. I'm getting calls from readers saying that they're unable to sign in, and I'm unable to sign in myself. Feel free to post your own experiences below. I've asked for official word from Microsoft, and I'll post it here when it comes in.
Update, 11:45 a.m.: Microsoft says it started seeing some problems around 8:45 a.m. Pacific time. Here's the statement from Adam Sohn, a director in Microsoft's Online Services Group.
"We are aware that a small percentage of Windows Live users are experiencing problems signing in to some services. We're actively investigating the cause and are working to take the appropriate steps to remedy the situation as rapidly as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and disruption this may be causing our customers."
Update, 12:05 p.m.: To address one of the questions raised in the comments, below, Microsoft says no customer data has been compromised. I'll continue to post updates as they come in.
Update, 1:20 p.m. Question for those still unable to sign in to Messenger and Hotmail: What happens if you restart your PC and try signing in again?
On the advice of a reader, Marc Hills, I tried restarting my Windows XP machine a few minutes ago, and I was able to sign in to Messenger for the first time today. It could be a coincidence -- perhaps service was simply restored to my account at that moment in time, independent of my machine restarting.
As it happens, I had an Automatic Update (the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2007) waiting, and it installed during the shut-down process. It's not clear if the Automatic Update had anything to do with the problem or solution. It, too, could be a coincidence. But Marc also had an Automatic Update waiting to install, and he was also able to sign in after restarting.
Update, 1:37 p.m.: Some people in the comments are saying that they're now able to sign in, apparently independent of the restart theory above. Feel free to continue to share your status.
Update, 5:30 p.m.: The problem appeared to be resolved as of early this afternoon. On the phone, Microsoft's Sohn declined to say what caused the problem, but he said it was not the result of any malicious activity. He reiterated the earlier statement that only a "small percentage" of users experienced problems. He declined to say how many people were affected.
"We hate it when anybody has trouble accessing the services, obviously," Sohn said. However, he added, "There have been much bigger incidents in the history of large-scale Internet services, both for us and for other people. ... This was just a hiccup. It's an unfortunate one, but that's part of what you have to deal with in running services at this scale."
