Ballmer on Windows Vista sales volume

At a press briefing here in New York today, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer gave a sense for the type of sales volume the company is anticipating for Windows Vista, compared with past versions of the operating system.

"We think in the next three months, we'll probably sell five times as many copies of Windows Vista as we ever did with (Windows 95) in the equivalent period of time," he said. "We'll probably go double what we did with Windows XP."

He acknowledged that part of that is due to the sheer increase in the number of PCs in the world since the launch of those previous versions, but he also pointed to factors including enthusiasm for Windows Vista among beta testers as an encouraging sign.

Meanwhile, this morning, Microsoft had a bunch of aerial performers display a big Windows Vista logo on the side of a building here. CNet News.com has a good photo gallery. In about an hour, Microsoft will begin the official launch event at the Nokia Theater -- which the company is referring to as the "Windows Vista Theater," lest it hold a launch event in a major competitor's namesake.

Vista be pimpin!
When you can afford it I recommend buying a good PC that already has it... it is idiot proof, and as stated above, Vista be pimpin!
My Xbox 360 is the only thing I love more than my Vista PC... well, when it comes to electronics! My Zune be pretty sweet too, but I can't chainsaw people with it... maybe the next gen of Zunes will have that feature.

The problem with Vista is that it periodically phones home to the Microsoft activation servers to determine if it is a pirated copy. If it misidentifies your copy of Vista as pirated, after a while, it goes into reduced funcationality mode, during which you have no access to your software or your data, until you can convince Microsoft otherwise. They will graciously allow you to repurchase it.

I reinstalled Vista after a minor configuration change and that was enough to start this process. After grilling me, they gave me a 64-bit number to type in. During the proess, they accused me of theft and lying, and they warned me I would have to go through this every time I reinstall Vista from now on.

Thank goodness I had an iMac. It is now my main machine.

I told a friend about this, giving him the scenario as if a virus caused it, then told him it was Windows Genuine {Dis]advantage. He promptly bought his son a MacBook for school.

Vista is secure, like a foot-thick steel door on a safe. However, it can fall off at any time. Maybe SP 1 will fix this, maybe the new version in 2009, but until Vista has overcome its suicidal tendencies and Microsoft's activation people have learned manners and tact, my computer company is Apple.

Oh, the irony! Microsoft made me into a Mac user!

FEATURED COMMENT

PictureI think taking a larger share of Facebook would be a good move. Facebook is preparing itself to be the platform of the web and this is exactly what MS needs. Also incorporating facebook services with outlook and hotmail could be extremely useful. Unfortunately, a complete buyout would put MS's name behind the service which could turn users away (as fickle as young people are) so, like the previous 250 million investment, it would need to be quiet."
