Linux vendor Red Hat posted solid results Thursday amid rising competitive pressure from Oracle, Novell and Microsoft. During the earnings call with analysts, Red Hat CEO Matthew Szulik was asked about Microsoft's announcement of three joint customers with Novell this week. Old news, he said.
"Those were existing accounts and there is at least one of them that I can speak definitely that is also a Red Hat account," Szulik said. "So those were older engagements and we were not involved in competitive situations with those two or three years ago when they became Novell accounts."
The existing Red Hat account would presumably be Credit Suisse. And one of the existing Novell customers is Deutsche Bank, whose chief technology officer, Clemens Jochum, said in the joint news release that the Microsoft-Novell deal "gives us the benefit of choice of platforms and tremendous flexibility that will help make our company more competitive and efficient."
On that subject, the VAR Guy blog pointed out this week (see Dec. 20 post) that Deutsche Bank, "was an early investor in SuSE Linux, so it's hardly surprising that the firm's IT team now praises the Novell-Microsoft deal."
Postscript: Welcome, Slashdot readers. You've no doubt figured out by now that the Slashdot item mistook this to mean that Szulik was calling the broader Novell-Microsoft deal old news. As explained in the original post above, he was actually saying that the customers touted by the companies this past week weren't really anything new, in his eyes, because they were already Novell customers.

I think taking a larger share of Facebook would be a good move. Facebook is preparing itself to be the platform of the web and this is exactly what MS needs. Also incorporating facebook services with outlook and hotmail could be extremely useful. Unfortunately, a complete buyout would put MS's name behind the service which could turn users away (as fickle as young people are) so, like the previous 250 million investment, it would need to be quiet."
