Zune debuts at No. 2

Picture

After a bunch of negative reviews and one particularly awkward moment on national television, there's a sliver of good news for Microsoft's Zune initiative today. But it might be fleeting.

In its first week, Zune secured the No. 2 spot among portable media players, well behind iPod, but edging out previous second-place holder SanDisk, according to data released by the NPD Group today. Zune won 9 percent of the U.S. market, measured by unit sales, and 13 percent of dollar volume for the week ended Nov. 18, NPD reported. Microsoft released the device Nov. 14.

The iPod represented 63 percent of unit sales and 72.5 percent of dollar volume for the week.

However, there have been signs that Zune's market share may have slipped since those initial days. One widely cited indication: The player debuted in the top 10 among Amazon.com's best-selling MP3 players but has since fallen lower in the rankings. As of Wednesday morning, the top-selling Zune model was at No. 17.

NPD said the weekly sales numbers come from a subset of the retailers who participate in its monthly report, but that they still reflect a good snapshot of the market. One interesting point from the NPD news release: Zune sales were still less than the combined sales of PlaysForSure devices.

Research! How about as of Thursday morning Zune is actually #62 and that's only for the black model. The other 2 are much much lower!

Thanks for fact-checking me, but you're looking at a different Amazon list -- the one for all electronics, including cameras, television sets, etc. The black Zune is #62 there but it's #17 on the Amazon list of MP3 players, which gives you a better sense for how it's faring against its direct competitors.

The zune is being sold in 30,000 stores.Amazon is just one of them.

Why is everyone so overly focused on just amazon's ranking.

The Microsoft ZUNE is doomed to failure, it's heavy and it lacks the WOW EFFECT. I guess the focus groups used to research what a consumer wants in an IPOD like device didn't do enough rrrrrrreeeeeesearch on the device.

I believe by spring this unit will be discontinued and thrown in the has been idea drawer. The innovators at Microsoft must have been locked up in the bunker to design the ZUNE, it will be obsolete by next June 2007.

The most meaningful inisght will arrive when looking at the "before picture." That is to say - MP3 player standings pre-Zune.

I suspect the pre-Zune-standings will show a long tail of low volume products (after iPod) that will now not survive thanks to Zune's marketing spend and even the product's functionality.

Predicting the failure of the Zune is niave...from a market perspective it's already a success.

My understanding is NPD's ratings do NOT include Apple Stores (they don't participate in their ratings) Can anyone else confirm that?

Besides National Democratic Party, what does NDP stand for or what is that an anacronym of.

...from a market perspective it's already a success yeah after a good launch.

FEATURED COMMENT

PictureI think taking a larger share of Facebook would be a good move. Facebook is preparing itself to be the platform of the web and this is exactly what MS needs. Also incorporating facebook services with outlook and hotmail could be extremely useful. Unfortunately, a complete buyout would put MS's name behind the service which could turn users away (as fickle as young people are) so, like the previous 250 million investment, it would need to be quiet."
