Zune on CNN: 'May I show you my new Shuffle?'

Sure, Microsoft is being pragmatic about its short-term chances against the iPod, but this one had to sting a little over in the Zune offices. Here was the exchange at the end of a CNN segment on Zune yesterday. (Also see the YouTube video.)

CNN host Soledad O'Brien: "May I show you my new Shuffle? ... Hello! Look at this. It weighs nothing. It literally is the size of a matchbook and weighs that. $70-something bucks! [Shifts attention to Zune.] So why would I buy that heavy -- although I get a lot more songs, obviously, and the wi-fi."

New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin: "And you get the video. You know, Microsoft in the end, I'm sure, will come out with something, I don't know if it will be that pretty, but something ... [Stops himself as O'Brien clips the Shuffle to her lapel] ... Isn't that neat? Oh my God."

CNN host Miles O'Brien, gesturing to Zune: "Why don't they get some decent design people to make things look better? I mean, it's clunky."

Sorkin, groaning: "No comment."

More on Zune:

  • The S.F. Chronicle's Dan Fost reports on the genesis of the Zune name.

  • Mary Jo Foley: "It's true: The Zune is incompatible with Vista." (Update: Microsoft says it should be compatible before Vista's retail release. See CNet News.com story.)

  • CNet News.com's Ina Fried test drives the Zune software.

Actually, Zune is incompatible with Vista releases prior to RTM.

What about subscription service...oh that's right ipod can't do that. That drives me crazy. The idiots at apple are still holding out. They may have neat-o designs that appeal to the technically challenged, but I would rather have 60GB player that can hold the 6,000 or so songs that I have downloaded via subscription service.

"They may have neat-o designs that appeal to the technically challenged"

Yes, and that 'neat-o design' and 'the technically challenged' have purchased 60M iPods, purchased 1 billion songs, and have fundamentally altered the way music is distributed to the masses.

"I would rather have 60GB player that can hold the 6,000 or so songs that I have downloaded via subscription service."

Excellent. You go do that. Be the 1-10% of people that can do that neat-o trick, and in the mean time I'm sure Apple will come out with some other neat-o device that fundamentally alters the way people do something.

Oh yeah, here's another fun little factoid that you may enjoy: The iPod is considered the most successful consumer product...ever.

Not bad for a 'neat-o' device:

    http://www.gizmag.com/go/6467/

Apple yesterday announced it is teaming up with Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United to deliver the first seamless integration between iPod and in-flight entertainment systems beginning in mid 2007. These six airlines will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections which power and charge their iPods during flight and allow the video content on their iPods to be viewed on the their seat back displays. Where's the innovation you might ask? It's in locking in their iPod in all the places that count when you're not at home – they've already announced dozens of automotive integration agreements - more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles will offer iPod connectivity. Additionally, Apple is working with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to bring even more leading airlines in-flight iPod connectivity in the future.

I was VERY skeptical about the Zune at first. But i checked it out yesterday anyway and I was very impressed. The sound and video quality was better than an iPod's, and i was able to transfer files between Zune's almost instantly. Also it transfers files from your PC to the player at a blazing speed. My only complaint was the software that comes with it. It automatically transferred ALL my songs onto the player, even the ones i didn't want. On the up side If you have saved playlists from iTunes it will automatically convert and transfer them into the Zune (In about 25 secs). Also, its a bit bigger than an iPod video, especially when you hold them side by side, but considering the bigger screen, it isn't so bad.

Oh yeah, did anybody mention iPod's Harddrive failure? My 3rd gen and my sister's iPod video both went kaplut a while back because their harddrives crashed. I don't care how "revolutionary" or successful the iPod is, they are obviously made with fashion in mind and quality...well...not.

"Oh yeah, did anybody mention iPod's Harddrive failure?"
If it happens to the iPod, it WILL happen to the Zune. The Zune must source from the same hard drive manufacturers as Apple, because there aren't many. Both players are equal in this area.

"What about subscription service...oh that's right ipod can't do that."
That's right, iPod doesn't do ransom music services (Pay up or your music goes bye-bye).

Bigger screen? Only physically. It's the same number of pixels as the iPod (320x240), which means you are seeing the same pixels as the iPod, just chunkier. If the Zune or the iPod kicks up the size AND the resolution, then I'll be impressed.

I have downloaded over 6,000 songs in the past year. Gee $5,940 versus $180...that's a tough one. I will probably be sick of half of those by this time next year, and I can replace them for only $180 dollars more.

All pettiness aside, Microsoft is pretty late in the game with this product, in a market that's already well-saturated. It seems to be a very nice player, but is it really anything special? If Microsoft weren't behind it, would we be paying so much attention?

First, the idea behind iTunes is that most people transfer all their CD's and don't need to buy 6000 songs. Second, the iTunes store also has movies and games. Finally: The Zune does not play songs from those music services (which Microsoft has now abandoned in favor of their new gadget's proprietary software). So next year when those services go under, you will have paid $360 for music which will maically disappear from your computer. Meanwhile every single song you buy from iTunes is yours forever.

I have an iPodm but I am all for newer and better mp3 players coming along because it makes the industry work hard to go back to the drawing board and come up with even better designs. I would consider a different product... but other than "wi-fi song sharing" (which is useless unless thousands of other people also have a Zune), Microsoft has brought nothing new to the table. And in a couple of months when Apple adds wifi to the iPod (probably), I'll be able to share songs with millions of people... not just the three people who thought they would try this new Zune thing out.

Why would you want wireless song sharing? This is Microsoft's biggest blunder. Can you imagine spammers in the subway sending you wireless taps on the shoulder every ten seconds so you can download one of their commercials? All Microsoft has done is given spammers another tool to bug us with.

Zune rocks. I am a hardcore music fanatic. I love the zune subscription service and its seamless integration with Zune. I typically try out hunderds of new songs every month and also like to listen to a lot of songs at work, cannot live without subscription service. I have tried all subscription services in the past yahoo, napster etc. Zune subscription is better than all of them and you get a player to go along with it.

Frankly the Ipod lovers should stop hating on Zune until Ipod comes with a subscription service. Then a fair comparison begins but until then Zune is way better and ppl will realize it sooner or later.

If the two players in question were the Shuffle vs the Video iPod, the same comments could have been made. A really dimwitted piece from CNN.

That is true. The shuffle cannot be compared to the Zune. The only point to that piece is that Apple has a whole fleet of players at a range of price points, and Microsoft has only one kind of ship in its fleet at this time.

Um, all those people chewing about subscription services, don't you get that you are basically helpless if Microsoft decides to jack up their prices, or if a label suddenly pulls their music from the service, you're SOL? Subscription services sound great, but it's just like listening to the radio, but one you have to pay for. At least if you pay for a CD or an iTunes song it's yours to keep forever.

Another thing about the Zune, which is the real reason Microsoft is getting into this market. They are trying to initiate a mass-DRM system. If you upload one of your own songs, created all by you, 100% copyright free, to another Zune, it will be deleted after 3 days. This is giving Microsoft a LOT of power. Microsoft's end goal is to control all content (as much as they can at least) because it then makes people dependent on them. When people are dependent, they are forced into markets willingly or unwillingly. Look at Windows. Is there a choice between Windows and another OS? (Macs don't count because only Apple sells them.)

With this DRM scheme they control the gates, they control who gets to keep what files, etc.. This is the future. If they get their way, say good bye to ever owning anything on your computer again, even the essays you write for class, even the emails you send to friends, even the pictures you took on your vacation.

Once their DRM scheme entraps enough consumers, all they have to do is say, "This is no longer a free service. If you would like your files to not be lost, please pay a $15/month fee."

This Zune is just the beginning. Just you wait.

Not just no but heck no.

Interesting reading this and what's behind that "I've got a zune" "wry smile".

    Bwa ha ha.

For those who make music and not just digital replications of it, paying to share a song for a few days maybe makes dollars but not sense.

"This Zune is just the beginning. Just you wait.

You people who have iPods are just scared of change. Remember the iPod when it forst came out? Campare that to the Zune. Yeah, I thought so. Anyway, why do you care so much if it's by microsoft or apple? Commercials are usually designed by corporate zombies who want you to buy their product. Look at the product, not some stupid commercial.

Zune is a great product, however, the only thing disheartening about owning one is having to put up with Microsoft's snail's pace when it comes to coming out with firmware updates. To put the icing on the cake, when they do release an update, it sucks (1.4: really, who cares about the "improved shuffle" feature? I use shuffle mode about as often as I use the "wifi": never). Microsoft needs to wake up and maximize on the Zune's potential quickly if they hope to expand in the future. Help send the message to Microsoft by signing the petition located at this site:

Its a shame she didn't accidentally sit on the iPod. ;) Imagine having some dinky little thing in your back pocket and sitting on it, or dropping it by accident and stepping on it. By bye shuffle. Smaller does not necessarily mean better. :P

    FEATURED COMMENT

PictureI think taking a larger share of Facebook would be a good move. Facebook is preparing itself to be the platform of the web and this is exactly what MS needs. Also incorporating facebook services with outlook and hotmail could be extremely useful. Unfortunately, a complete buyout would put MS's name behind the service which could turn users away (as fickle as young people are) so, like the previous 250 million investment, it would need to be quiet."
