Audio Extra: Gates, Ballmer on Microsoft's future

See below for some audio clips of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, speaking on a range of topics during an interview yesterday after marking the company's 30th anniversary at Safeco Field. These are extended versions of some of the answers in the Q&A that ran in Saturday morning's newspaper:

  • Gates talks about some of the progress he expects the company to make during the next five years: MP3, 0:44. (Note: Contains some stadium-related background noise not present in other clips.)

  • Ballmer on how the company's business model will evolve over the same time period: MP3, 0:30.

  • Gates discusses Microsoft's competition with Google, pointing out the similarities and differences between the companies, and saying that Microsoft's breadth works to its advantage: MP3 , 2:30.

  • Both executives answer the question of how long they plan to continue leading the company: MP3, 1:19

  • Is Microsoft today perceived to be as cool or cutting-edge as it might have been in the past? In any event, does it really matter if it is or not? Answers from both executives: MP3, 2:17.

  • Joking around with Ballmer, Gates talks about his dance performance in the "Napoleon Dynamite" spoof created by Microsoft and shown at recent conferences. MP3, 0:27.

    I really enjoyed listening to Gates and Co.
    I just wish there had been a video.
    Especially of Bill dancing.
