From the P-I:

  • Rival shines in shadows at Microsoft's L.A. event: Organizers of the open-source Mono project, unsuccessful in their bid to host a session inside Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference, drew a large crowd from the event to a nearby hotel to learn about using Mono to make programs for Linux and other operating systems. Related blog post: The Mono 'experiment'.

  • Microsoft unveils rivals to Adobe graphics tools: The Redmond company unveiled its new collection of professional graphic design and animation tools Wednesday, moving into the longtime domain of Adobe Systems and the company Adobe is acquiring, Macromedia.

  • Gates on Apple, Google -- and Microsoft's future: In an interview with the Seattle P-I, Bill Gates answered questions on a wide range of topics, including Microsoft's growth prospects in the Seattle region, its "smart competitors," its ambitions in China, and efforts to shore up the security of its software. • Microsoft throws open the door to new Office: Microsoft will try to extend the dominance of its two largest franchises by releasing a set of substantially redesigned Office programs next year in conjunction with a new version of the Windows operating system.

  • Software Notebook: RSS gets its due at Microsoft developer conference: The technology, best known for letting people subscribe to streams of information from news sites and blogs, is being adopted by Microsoft in a variety of unexpected ways -- not only in Internet Explorer and online services but also in more traditional programs, such as business software.

  • Software Notebook: Pitching a new Windows: Microsoft will show thousands of software developers details about the next Windows -- hoping to persuade them to build programs for the new operating system.
