Microsoft and the 'open source crowd'

There's an extensive and interesting discussion taking place on Microsoft Visual Studio evangelist Josh Ledgard's weblog about the company's evolving role in open-source communities. His post is getting lots of attention today in part because of a reference to it this morning on Slashdot. One of the points he makes:

Engaging the "open source crowd" is something that we have historically neglected. Hell, from their perspective, some of our assaults on Linux are downright insulting. I cringe when I see the news headlines like "<Random Microsoft Executive> Rails Against Open Source". Of course, they get to fire back and be just as insulting with some of their initiatives. Some bridge crossing could do both sides some good. There is a balance to be struck somewhere between the "free software radicals" and the "only for profit" mentalities.

For more background on the two open-source Microsoft developer tools mentioned in Ledgard's post (WiX and WTL), and the broader strategy they reflect, see this previous P-I story and this one. (Note Ledgard's correction of the Slashdot post: He wasn't responsible for those two projects.) Also see this item about the strong response those projects have received on SourceForge, the open-source site where developers can access them. And for some entertaining reading, see Ledgard's previous post explaining what it's like for a Microsoft employee to attend a LinuxWorld convention: "When Penguins Attack!!!"

Should MSFT be kind to the Linuks crowd??

Should MSFT be kind to any theives??

I think not

Should people save posts that make some sort of sense? I think so. Where thieves and linux are related, I'm not sure.

Regardless if MS should be kind to Linux or not is not the question. The bigger question is whether or not MS operating systems, copyrighted source code, are stronger than Linux, an open source code system.

I've read where one MS spokesman, the guy in Paris (commenting on Paris city hall thinking about a move to Linux), say something to the effect of, "Open source is like giving away the combination to your locks! Who would do that?"

The guy has it all wrong. In MS operating systems are so weak that if they source code got out, and a lot of it has already, everyone running MS operating systems would be in trouble... kind of like how they are today.

With Linux, anyone can look at the source code. With hundreds and possibly thousands of developers (conjecture) working on it and closing holes as soon as they are discovered, the OS can only be stronger then what MS puts out. MS programmers are working for a paycheck. A lot of them could care less what kind of security problems lurk in the darkness of their spaghetti. I know several who have told me just that.

The folks who work on Linux are doing it to make a great product, have some resume material, and try to rock the evil empire (MS), as they see it. Why not? Profit does not make the world go around and sometimes people who can make a difference figure that out.

In the end, Linux developers will profit not only with paychecks but with knowledge that things have gotten better partly from their efforts.

Go Linux.

This is sort of like in late 1960's where there were the Liberals and Conservatives. The Microsoft Liberals want to "rap" with the kids ( Open Source ) so they can "groove their bag".

The Microsoft Conservatives want to crush Linux and Open Source outright. If you want to know what kind of attacks are happening right now, read John Ashcrofts latest statement -- he basically want to *outlaw* Open Source Software.

If profits do not make the world go around, then how do you make a living? Robbing banks?

What is the fight about anyway?

Company A0 develops and sells Closed Source Software + support.
Company A1 provides Advance Support for Closed Software

Group B0 develops Open-Source Software
Company B1 sells Open-Source Software + additinal feature and support.
Company B2 provides Advance Support for Open-sourced Software

If you like A0 buy it, need support get A1.
If you like B0, downlaod it, want to use at a corporate level buy B1, need support B2...

Then where is the fight ?
Just let each other thrive.. OK!
AND FAIR COMPETITION PLZ.

:) Really if this was possible.

I should have been more clear.

Fair profits are easy to come by and I have no problem with that- I make a modest living by charging a fair price for work done.

Unfair profits, charging more than the work is worth (and getting away with it), is where the problem is at and it's rampant because consumers are so addicted to their 'stuff', they will pay almost any price to get it, regardless if it's a fair price or an unfair price.
