December 22, 2003Mythic vs. MythicaVideo-game news site RPG Vault has an interview with Mark Jacobs, the CEO of Mythic Entertainment, which said today that it suing Microsoft for trademark infringement for its Mythica game. He describes speaking with Mythica designer Hal Milton at the E3 gaming convention: I expressed to Hal both our displeasure and concern with Microsoft's use of the name Mythica for their next game. I actually started the conversation with him by sarcastically telling him that I was thinking about calling our next game Microsofta, and asking him if he thought that would be okay with Microsoft. In Mythic Entertainment's press release, the company draws parallels between its suit and Microsoft's suit against Lindows.com on allegations that Lindows infringes on the Windows name. Bloomberg News quotes a Microsoft spokeswoman as saying that the company has been promoting "Mythica" for several months and during that time "has not been made aware of any confusion among consumers." The company is reviewing the complaint, according to the Bloomberg story. Posted by Todd Bishop at December 22, 2003 04:29 PMComments
Wish Microsoft would stop waisting good programmers making games with no teaching objectives. 2 weeks after the opening sale the first one hits the garbage, and will be joined by others within the month. Why-- NO OBJECTIVE -- once game is done --it's done. all else is editorial. How about giving idle programmers to NASA for real use. Instead of hours of mindless blah. Posted by: John L. Allen at December 26, 2003 04:12 PMI'm not quite sure why someone would choose this forum to bash Microsoft. Particularly over games. Why not bash the movie industry over movies like Ishtar? Is it because those are art? Never mind that they consume many more resources than a game in terms of manpower and intellectual capital. And he government can't be bothered to fund NASA enough to afford the services of the Microsoft porgrammers in any event. Incidentally, it strikes me that Mythica, as an MMORPG, has no objective and is theoretically open ended. In other words, it's never done! I do agree with what appears to be the point of Mr. Allen's comment and that is that it would be nice if there were more of a purpose to games. There's a potential to educate and to makeart in the games industry that still has yet to come to fruition. Perhaps on day... I'm not quite sure why someone would choose this forum to bash Microsoft.
