December 18, 2003Spam: Behind the scenesEver wonder about the mindset of the people who clog your inbox with unsolicited e-mail? The lawsuits filed today by Microsoft and the New York Attorney General against an alleged spam ring were based in part on e-mail exchanges among employees and principals of the companies the suits target. Those e-mails, subpoenaed by the Attorney General's office, were included as exhibits in the New York case -- providing a rare glimpse of a bulk e-mailing operation at work. Here's an example: From: SRich10195@aol.com That's just one message, but you can see all the e-mails for yourself. The New York Attorney General's office has posted online the full text of its filings, including its lawsuit and exhibits (see the links at the bottom of the news release). The e-mails start on page 45 of this .pdf document. Addendum, Jan. 2: The exhibits .pdf appears to have been taken down by the AG's office. I'll try to find another copy and upload it. Spam is an intolerable invasion of my private space. I don't live in the Internet. I work on a computer in my home. Nobody has a right to enter my home by any means except by my invitation. this is a constitutional right expressed in the forbidding of forced domiciling of military troops. Not all spam cn be blocked by my ISP software, e.g. when the spammer's address changes in subtle ways with each transmission. Posted by: Fred Hart at December 18, 2003 02:38 PMWho cares about your privacy? I make a good living as a consultant building and securing mail servers. I am constantly upgrading and installing computer hardware and software. Myself and others like me practically keep the email industry alive. Microsoft, Symantec, Dell, and other companies would go broke without email. Everyone needs email, and not this Hotmail or AOL junk. 99% of my recurring calls for support and contract work are spam or virus related. I need that revenue stream. Antivirus and anti-spam software are the most profitable and consistent services I offer. I install anti-spam software and I would be out of business if junk mail weren't a problem. Vive la spam! Posted by: Boo Hoo at December 18, 2003 02:56 PMReading the online filings gives a very interesting inside view of a spammer organization. Thanks for posting this info. -RA Posted by: Rahul Bhide at December 18, 2003 02:56 PMThe people sending Spam, is craming Garbage down The people sending Spam, is craming Garbage down I wish there was a way to send something right back at them. I wish I could reach right through the monitor and choke the S%@t out of 'em! Karl. Posted by: Karl Cranford at December 18, 2003 09:39 PMLEAVE ME ALONE!!! I can go to a doctor for my prscriptions, I know how to get a mortage, I don't want a remote control race car for the holidays, I don't want a cruise even if FREE.. Spammers have the right to send mail, but they don't have the right to sent it unbidden over the connection for which I pay and put it on the hard-drive I bought for other purposes. Your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose --- and your right to send your bits ends at the interface to my network." --- ANON Posted by: jim Russell at December 19, 2003 08:53 AMThanks everyone for your comments. I've posted a follow-up item here: http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/001165.html Posted by: Todd Bishop at December 22, 2003 07:10 PMThe shortcut to the exhibit is broken, do you have a new location for it? The NYS OAG site search isn't helpful. Here's the original URL, which no longer works: http://www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2003/dec/syn2.pdf Posted by: crosscut at January 2, 2004 04:33 AMI think someone should publish the street addresses of some of these spammer organizations, so we can sign them up to every junk postal offering going... It would be just desserts! handy klingeltoene Ein wirklich sehr Interessante Seite mit guten Informationen. Posted by: Handy Klingeltoene at September 18, 2004 01:08 AMPost a comment
