· Want to blog for the P-I?

In May of 2006 I was diagnosed with breast cancer – less than two months before my 40th birthday. While still reeling from the shock of my diagnosis I decided I didn’t want to experience cancer the way so many other people do. I didn’t want to be depressed, or sad, or defeated. I was going to turn cancer into a positive experience and have fun with it. Did I just say that? Fun? I’m kidding, right? I couldn’t be more serious. I was going to have a blast with cancer if it was the last thing I did. And since this is cancer we’re talking about it literally could have been the last thing I did. This was my life and I wasn’t going to waste any more time. The time for living was now. And so my adventure began.

This isn’t a blog just for cancer survivors. While it’s inspired by my personal experience with cancer this blog is about living, not dying. It’s about thriving not just surviving. It’s about choosing to change your life for the better no matter what crappy thing life may throw at you. And really, everyone can benefit from that. You don’t have to be diagnosed with cancer to need a kick in the butt to get out there and live your life.

Now a little about me – prior to my cancer diagnosis I worked as an Adoption Advisor at The Humane Society for Seattle/King County. I got along great with the dogs but the cats seemed to bite me a lot. I enjoyed working on the front lines, matching people and pets, but my oncologist suggested risking a cat bite during chemo wouldn’t be the smartest idea. He had a point. So I hung up my animal welfare hat and embarked on a new life as Cancer Survivor Extraordinaire. I share a home on wooded acreage in Redmond with my husband Bill and our two old dogs. Some of my secret ambitions include meeting Dr. Phil, hosting Saturday Night Live, and rising to the top as a rock star. Oh yeah, and I think it would be pretty cool to someday get paid for my writing.
