Senior Byron Davenport's name isn't listed on the depth chart. After spraining his ankle in camp, Davenport isn't surprised since his practice time has been limited, but the fiery cornerback said his goal has been to make "every situation serve you for the best."
He and I talked this afternoon.
How's the ankle, Byron?
Davenport: It's coming along. I actually went out yesterday and was jogging around on it. I was supposed to be in the pool, and I have been in the pool doing work, but I needed to see how it could do on the run. It's coming along, for sure. It's a tough thing because it's just taking time. I'm pretty locked in on coming. This week? I don't know. BYU for sure, maybe this week, but it's just time.
This is the second consecutive camp you've been injured in camp. How disappointing is this?
Davenport: It's more frustrating than disappointing. I went home (to Los Angeles) this summer because I really needed to get some coaching and do some real training. I had a good spring -- nine picks (in scrimmages) -- but the depth chart changed. ... I started off having a good camp, too, and then my foot gets caught in the turf? Really?! It wasn't about me not being in shape, like a hamstring, or something from not being in shape. It was my foot getting caught in the turf. That's just... just unfortunate, you know?
Secondary coach J.D. Williams said you've been "snake-bitten."
Davenport: That means bad luck. You have to make every situation serve you and I'm trying to take this as a blessing.
Like the depth chart thing... I knew I had to get some fundamental coaching this offseason. I went home and worked with Doc (Moye, former Fresno State corneback and current Long Beach Poly defensive backs coach). We really worked on fundamentals, being in better shape. I did back-pedaling, working on a more explosive first step and just training. I had to get home and I had to get real training.
Snake-bitten? That seems to be the word, but you have to make every situation serve you, like I said.
The coaches moved Mesphin Forrester to cornerback and redshirt freshman Quinton Richardson is listed as the starter. Thoughts?
Davenport: I'm supremely confident in my abilities. I know the situation. I'm going (to get back on the field) and I'm going to show what I can do.
I'm sitting back and taking the time right now and I hope to be 100 percent by BYU. I am confident and I gotta (sic) get this done."

Thanks for the update Molly, your piece on what this kid has been through is still one of the best pieces of journalism I have read in a long time.
