Where do the Huskies go from here?

For a story that we waited on all day Wednesday, the result couldn't have been what Huskies fans wanted when DeWayne Walker decided to stay at UCLA with Rick Neuheisel instead of accepting Tyrone Willingham's offer to come to Washington. (Here is my story on it.)

The big question is now, where do the Huskies go from here?

Willingham was in a meeting when I called him this morning and I'm doubtful he will return the call. So, this leads us to the speculation well.

Walker was clearly the Huskies' No. 1 choice. Strike.

Former Michigan DC Ron English was among the top candidates, but he didn't wait around for the Huskies and instead accepted the same position at Louisville. Strike.

While the Huskies are waiting on an 0-2 pitch, it's ridiculous to think there isn't a lot of interest from qualified applicants in this position. But the tenuous situation regarding Willingham's status (president Dr. Mark Emmert didn't offer specifics, but spelled out that Willingham needed to win in 2008 to earn the fifth year of his contract) makes it a hard sell for established, proven coaches.

To overcome that, a whole lot of money and a multi-year contract would be necessary to lure an established coach. So far, that hasn't happened.

But what about the up-and-comer, like a position coach doing good things under a smart D-coordinator (Steve Kaufusi at BYU)?

Or an NFL assistant wanting to hold the reins (Jacksonville's Tom Williams)?

Or even a former coach wanting back in the game (former Notre Dame coach Bob Davies)?

The Huskies may have to go outside the box on this hire and, if it is done thoroughly and innovatively, it could mean good things for the program.

Also, here is a link to the blog of my colleague Ted Miller, who thinks Willingham should offer Oregon State's Mark Banker the same money and autonomy Willingham offered Walker.

Why would any right thinking person be surprised that credible defensive coordinator candidates would turn Ty down? Ty is done, put a fork in him, he is dead man walking. Two year contracts won't work either, new Coach will want his own guy not another's hang-over, again all credible coaches no as much.
Should have pulled the trigger on Ty and put him out of his misery already. Another year of uninspired play with second tier recruits is on the order, can anyone say 3-9.
Only chance Ty has will be a soon unemployed NFL Assistant who has no other one year jobs.

0-2? English was never going to be hired after his interview.

So far that has happened? We only learned yesterday evening that #1 wasn't coming.

Doo-d, I disagree with everything you have said about Ty and the Husky program. Why is Washington any different than UCLA was two years ago when they hired Walker and his staff out of the NFL. Their coach was on the hotseat and was lucky to last two years. Their program wasn't any stronger than the UDub is today. Their DC was just rehired on probably better terms and more money than he has had because he has done a good job. Any DC looking at Washington has to think that if he does a decent job he will look like a hero and has a chance to become head coach in the unlikely event that Ty will be replaced in a couple of years. The position offers nothing but positives.

purplepaws, you are comparing apples to oranges. Two years ago the UCLA Coach was hardly on the hot seat, it may have been starting to warm, but it wasn't a hotseat by any means. Ty has been told he has one to get it done by the President of the University, Walker & UCLA were a vastly different landscape. Washington has fallen to the bottom third of the PAC 10, let me repeat myself, the Huskies are no longer relevant under Ty, they are at the same level as AZ & Stanford, and below State! They need to win all of the non-conference games to insure a non-losing season. How far we have fallen! Don James must get acid reflux at the thought of this. There is no recruiting, the pipeline from S.CA is dry.
Ty will hire an NFL castoff who will be one and done.
It is truly sad, this once proud FB Program brought to ashes by a bungling Administration & bad hires. Our Coach is in Columbia, MO.

Just evaluate which direction both programs are heading.... It comes down to "out-of-the-box" leadership decisions, too (drawing from one of the challenges made in the blog).

Dodorr I have to disagree. The Huskies have the best recruiting class in...well I can't remember a better one to be honest with you. The class after the NC under the heroic James was one of the worst classes in Husky history. Jake Locker and the OLine and the increased amount of stability will pay dividends in 2008. As everyone has said on this board, if the Huskies could have been coached into a mediocre Pac-10 defense the Huskies would have been bowling. The offense got it done and they will be strong again next season. The d coordinator as purple paws said, will only have to coach this defense up to mediocrity to be a hero and get the dawgs into a bowl game. You can look at things two ways as the old cliche goes "the glass is either half full or half empty" Now compare what the other teams have in the pac-10 have returning next season Wsu Oregon? I'll take what Jake and the Huskies have.

D, I still disagree with everything you have said. Your latest effort states that Washington is irrelevant. If that's the case, why has the UDub recruited so well this year? Maybe just irrelevant to you. When you say they have fallen behind State you must mean Washington should fire TW and hire a coach from a secondary school. You obviously are not aware of Washington's recruiting class this year. Finally, I don't know what you mean about Don James pipeline to SoCal. He got some players, Kennedy, Kaufman, and several from the Sacremento area but not a pipeline. The bungling happened with the last administration, Hedges and group, not this one. Ty and Emmert have felt the consequences but are digging out of the problems very nicely. You might be happily surprised next year--stick with it!

Where was it stated that Ty Willingham had to "win or else" next year? This fact is being bandied about in here like it is common knowledge. Mark Emmert never said anything of the sort. Someone please quote Emmert where he said that - or please stop saying it.

0-2 (as in baseball count?) Are you kidding me? That is sooooo over the top. Hiring people into jobs takes time and in this case, lots of care. Too much speculative reporting on your part.

Emmert will no doubt expect more improvement next year. Let's not forget this team has been in most all of its games the past two years. That smacks of improvement, but not enough talent to win the close ones. I'm not worried about Willingham in the least. But I don't understand what good it does to keep repeating that next year is "win or else" for Tyrone Willingham. If it is, give us the quote where the prez says that.

Molly -

Any chance that Ty takes a look at Ron Rivera the former DC of the Chicago Bears and current LB coach in for the San Diego Chargers?

Molly-

In response to your question: "Straight to hell, where they belong!!

After tonight's whipping at Hec Ed, need we say more???

Ty and what is left of the once proud 'Husky Tradition' is back where it belongs, on the bottom looking up, where unless you are the lead Dawg, the view remains the same!!

People need to realize that there is a new day dawning, and our future is so bright, we need to wear shades.

Go Cougs!!

Dear Gary R. Cox

Us people will realize there is a new day dawning, with a future so bright you need to wear shades......when your Couged It Cougs actually does something of significance instead of losing in the 1st round of the Pac-10 tournament and beating a dental school university and losing to Vanderbilt in last years tournament?..............whew that's quite the resume to be talking smack, my misguided friend.

EXCEPT FOR THE DEFENSE (WHICH IS READIED TO BECOME IMPROVED )The Huskys have improved in every statistical category. TW took on a team that No-body else wanted to touch...and brick by brick they are being molded into great young STUDENT athletes....They will have a DEGREE , character, resolve, honesty,FB skills , and winning atitudes on the FB field and the field of LIFE. BE REAL..this job is a great opportunity to turn a Storied program around.....I'm sure that the powers that be recognized that any coach who was willing to take on this REBUILDING would require 4-5-6 years to build a program that would not only be able to stand on its on...but also be pro-growth.....The Prez. has confidently left it up to TW to find an outstanding DC.He (DC) is also going to have growing pains.....but I'd bet a little toenail to 900,000$ that UW will be improved in every single area of importance in 08 & 09 for Nat'l title contention!!!
GO DAWGS
