« BREAKING NEWS: Walker staying at UCLA | Main | Baird on the coaching search »
For a story that we waited on all day Wednesday, the result couldn't have been what Huskies fans wanted when DeWayne Walker decided to stay at UCLA with Rick Neuheisel instead of accepting Tyrone Willingham's offer to come to Washington. (Here is my story on it.)
The big question is now, where do the Huskies go from here?
Willingham was in a meeting when I called him this morning and I'm doubtful he will return the call. So, this leads us to the speculation well.
Walker was clearly the Huskies' No. 1 choice. Strike.
Former Michigan DC Ron English was among the top candidates, but he didn't wait around for the Huskies and instead accepted the same position at Louisville. Strike.
While the Huskies are waiting on an 0-2 pitch, it's ridiculous to think there isn't a lot of interest from qualified applicants in this position. But the tenuous situation regarding Willingham's status (president Dr. Mark Emmert didn't offer specifics, but spelled out that Willingham needed to win in 2008 to earn the fifth year of his contract) makes it a hard sell for established, proven coaches.
To overcome that, a whole lot of money and a multi-year contract would be necessary to lure an established coach. So far, that hasn't happened.
But what about the up-and-comer, like a position coach doing good things under a smart D-coordinator (Steve Kaufusi at BYU)?
Or an NFL assistant wanting to hold the reins (Jacksonville's Tom Williams)?
Or even a former coach wanting back in the game (former Notre Dame coach Bob Davies)?
The Huskies may have to go outside the box on this hire and, if it is done thoroughly and innovatively, it could mean good things for the program.
Also, here is a link to the blog of my colleague Ted Miller, who thinks Willingham should offer Oregon State's Mark Banker the same money and autonomy Willingham offered Walker.

Why would any right thinking person be surprised that credible defensive coordinator candidates would turn Ty down? Ty is done, put a fork in him, he is dead man walking. Two year contracts won't work either, new Coach will want his own guy not another's hang-over, again all credible coaches no as much.
Should have pulled the trigger on Ty and put him out of his misery already. Another year of uninspired play with second tier recruits is on the order, can anyone say 3-9.
Only chance Ty has will be a soon unemployed NFL Assistant who has no other one year jobs.
