Settling in in Sooner Country

I arrived at Oklahoma's Memorial Stadium about an hour and a half ago, greeted by the fragrant aroma of barbecue. I've never seen tailgating like this. Rows and rows of tents, smokers, grills, TVs, satellites even! It's impressive.

Just beyond the Southeast corner of the stadium is the Barry Switzer Center, which houses a most impressive Hall of Legends. Now, we are all aware of Oklahoma's storied tradition: 426 all-conference performers, 141 All-Americans, four Heisman Trophy-winners, seven national championships. There are murals, plaques, videos on panel TVs -- all commemorating these achievements. The Heisman Trophies are all displayed. Phots are plastered brilliantly everywhere. Orange Bowl trophies, championship trophies. It is truly inspiring. The thing that surprised me most is how the Hall presents current Sooners coach Bob Stoops right in with legends Bennie Owen, Bud Wilkinson and Switzer. Stoops's tenure is right in with it.

And that struck me... with this thought, "The Huskies have to compete against THIS?" When it comes to national recruiting, the Huskies, indeed, have to compete with this.

A human tunnel greeted the Sooners from their busses to the Switzer Center and several recruits walked in with the players. One fan shouted the name of a recruit and yelled, "We want you here!" The recruits were met at the Center by attractive female students and were surely led around the Hall of Legends.

UW athletic director Todd Turner has talked at length -- and has been moving on -- an upgrade of the Huskies Hall of Fame. I can't imagine Turner didn't peek in on Oklahoma's brilliant Hall for inspiration.

Now... onto some HUSKIES NEWS:

Several Huskies came onto the field about 30 minutes ago for an informal workout to reveal a uniform change: Purple pants.

Last season, the Huskies wore gold pants with white jerseys on the road. They wear gold pants and purple jerseys at home.

PERSONNEL NEWS:

There are some internal rumblings concerning an interesting position change. Though I haven't confirmed this with the coaching staff, I've been told that injured defensive tackle Jordan White-Frisbee will be moved (back) to the offensive line.

White-Frisbee, the giant from Kenmore, started as a true freshman at DT. Last season, in what Coach Tyrone Willingham described as White-Frisbee's "perfect storm," he suffered a stress fracture in his right foot, had surgery, moved from the d-line to the o-line, broke his foot again, had another surgery.

White-Frisbee, who said he came into fall camp a bit overweight, had a rough time in August as flareups of the foot slowed him. White-Frisbee didn't play at all in the Huskies season-opening 35-29 win against San Jose State. Willingham said that that was, in part, because the Huskies didn't play much of their base defense. D-line coach Randy Hart intimated in camp that White-Frisbee isn't quite in playing shape, too.

This latest develop comes just days after White-Frisbee was placed back in a protective boot and missed practice action in the latter part of the week.

If White-Frisbee is, in fact, struggling with that foot, it would seem that a move to the offensive line might save him some pounding on it. If he's struggling to drop weight -- though Willingham has praised him for his work in that area -- White-Frisbee may not have to in the OG spot.

I'll have more on this later. Again, this has NOT been confirmed by coaches, but I will ask and let you know. (I'm also not certain if White-Frisbee made the trip, but will see soon.)

Traveling with the Huskies, though, are true freshman fullback Paul Homer, linebacker Donald Butler (who have both played), as well as quarterback Jake Locker and offensive linemen Cody Habben and Ryan Tolar.

Quarterback Isaiah Stanback, who had his hand taped this week in practice, is not wearing any protective gear or tape on it. He is warming up now.

More at kickoff...
